The white 917 Longtail in that Goodwood video is the first 917 that was driven on a race track … in May 1969. I was 12 years old. Porsche debuted the 917 at the 1000 km race on the country roads that were used as the ~ 9 miles long race track of Spa-Francorchamps very close to where I grew up. Porsche came there with the first two white 917‘s Longtail. They were all I was interested in at that race weekend. I literally looked the Porsche mechanics over their shoulders. Still remember very well how the first of the two 917‘s left the paddock at Eau Rouge during practice for the first lap ever on a race track, with Gerhard Mitter at the wheel … and shortly after that Jo Siffert going on his first lap with the other 917.

The 917K in the Golf colors in that video is the one that Pedro Rodriguez & Jackie Oliver drove in the 1000 km race in Spa-Francorchamps in 1971. Seeing the 917K‘s fly by on the country road between Malmedy and Stavelot (Masta straight) during practice at speeds of up to 240 mph was something I‘ll never forget. That race was the fastest 1000 km race ever in motorsport history. It was finished in 4 hours and 1 minute, although it started as a wet race.

Here is a video of that very 917K, carefully moved at the Historic Grand Prix in Zandvoort in 2017.

I am surprised Count Rossi's street legal 917 wasn't in the Martini & Rossi family business livery.
Nice write up and pictures https://historicmotorsportcentral.co...d-porsche-917/

The 917-021 is the one that was meticulously rebuilt in a race car garage 15 minutes from my home several years ago. It is still maintained there. But it is not street legal anymore. It‘s owned by a (wealthy) Belgian and driven in historic races.

With regard to condition, the silver 917-030 can not compete with the “psychedelic“ 917-021. A lot of work & €‘s have been put into the latter. It‘s one of the best & most detailed restorations I have seen. I would have painted it in the Martini or Gulf colors though. …

The 1st picture shows the perfectly rebuilt flat-12 engine being installed. The men with the glasses are the two brothers who own that garage. The 2nd Pic shows the car at La Source (Spa-Francorchamps).
