2005 E320 side airbags deployed while on a lift

The car was up on a lift getting new flex discs and engine mounts. One of the transmissions tunnel bracket bolts wouldn't come loose so we used a hammer blow impact torx and a 2 pound hammer. On the second blow, the driver's side curtain, driver's seat and driver's side rear door airbags deployed. The hammer was swung upwards so the blow couldn't have been that heavy.

This car has 309,000 miles and I've put the last 217,000 miles on it since 2010. I'm the only driver. I've never had an accident, much less a side accident. None of the airbags have been replaced, serviced or moved from their factory locations since I've had the car.

I just remembered some upholstery work I had done on the driver's seat 3 years ago...had the seat back left side panel replaced where it had worn from all the sliding into and out of the door. This panel is directly in front of the seat back airbag thats located on the left side of the seat back. Wonder if the upholstery place disturbed that airbag and it's been waiting all this time to go off. Wonder if it did go off first and set off the others.

Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone know of any applicable service bulletins or recalls related to this?

Can a car upholstery place replace the airbags?

Pipe up with any and all thoughts or suggestions.

thanks,

Joel Wilkins

As discussed in your other thread the sensor on the bottom of the car near were the stuck bolt is
was more than likely tricked by the pounding of the hammer.
We had a 2005 that had the side bags deploy after the car went over a 3 inch ice ridge in the winter
at 35 mph.

I have not found any bulletins or recalls on the issue.

Thank you for the information, Noodles. My plan is to find replacement airbags and fix the car. And then NOT pound on the belly before disabling the airbag sensor.
