There are a plethora of products and power polishers that will take car of your cars paint.

This is a fairly aggressive compound that should remove just about any paint defect

London doesn't have much sun, so I wonder what oxidation you have?
I live in the areas with very high UV, but I do everything I can to protect my cars from it.
20 yo MB still looks great if protected.
Than what year you have? Somewhere around 2007 MB start putting better clear coat and I see the difference in paint chips.

Any pictures?
20 yo paint probably could use claying and then waxing.

If the clear coat is gone then there is not much that can save it other than a respray.
