Reliability of AMG Engines

So i'm looking into buying a CLS class benz, but i'm curios about the reliability of the high performance AMG engines.

I can either go with the newer cl63 which is the naturally aspirated, or the cls55 which is the supercharged v8?

which one is more reliable? also are AMG engines reliable in general.. i used to own a 97 s class that was great, but i hear mercedes build quality has gone down.. i just don't want to be stuck with expensive repairs down the road

THANKS!

Well, i have a 2002 CLK55 and that motor is not supercharged. The slightly newer models of AMG come with the Kompressor engine. It also comes on a 6 cylinder models as well (23AMG, 32AMG etc). The CLS63 (AMG)and the CLS550 in the CLS case are neither super charged. The horsepower difference and the AMG tag on the CLS63 are about the only difference. I would put the AMG engine over the stock engine anyday but it looks like the CLS550 still has the "AMG" V8 from ol and the new one that's 6.3 liters. I would say you couldn't lose either way! Good luck, one 68k and the other is 93k. Post some pics when you get it!

I would go with a naturally aspired AMG engine...CL63. Nonetheless, any AMG engine (hand built) is extremely reliable. Just my two cents

I would think that both engine are very reliable but the naturaly asperated one would tend to last longer because Superchargers and Turbocharger tend to shorten the life of the engine even it the engine is built for it. I would go for the CLS 63.

Thumbs up

AMG engines are very reliable; I have never seen or heard of any engine failure, and I post on many forums. My choice would be CLS 63AMG with 465 ft lb of torque.

the cls 550 DOES NOT share and engine platform with the CLS 55. the 550 is a new mercedes motor. the 55 is the amg version of the last 500 motor. BOTH the 63 and the 550 represent entirely new motors, and are completely different from each other, also, the 550 has about 380 hp, the 63 should be nearer to the 500 hp mark.

The old 55 AMG V8 motor was the M113.

The new 550 motor in non-AMG is the M273.

The new 63 AMG motor is the M156.
