1980's Mercedes 240GD W460

Does anyone know if the 240GDs come with heating assembly? If so where would it be located in the engine compartment.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Preheater for the engine or heater to warm the cabin?

It’s the heater to warm the cabin.

As far as I know all Gs came with a heater. It is in the big, hard to get to, plastic box in the dash. That is where the fan is too. The heater valve is the round thing on the heater hose in the engine compartment on the right side of the air intake scoop.

Thanks Alan. Is it the round thing I have circled in red or green in the picture below?

And is the heater unit with the fan in the black box in the middle of the dashboard?

Sorry for all these questions. Totally newbie here.

Here. With the heater hoses running to both sides. There should be a bowden cable going to it that moves when the heater lever (middle one under the radio) is moved. The lever is most of the way to "warm", so you should have heat. Most likely the motion isn't getting transferred over to the valve. That will take some diagnosing.

Thanks for pointing where it is.

I did some diagnostic today and noticed when the engine running and heater turned on with the middle lever moved all the way to the right, the intake hose (red circle) was hot but the output hose (green) was cold.

Could it be the heater core (exchanger)? If so, is there an easy way to replace that or do I have to remove the dashboard?

It is certainly possible that it is the core. But first verify that the valve is opening. That white lever on the side of the valve is what open/closes the flow. See if it moves with the lever. Failing that take the valve off of the car and look through it.

You can check the core for flow by taking off the hoses and blowing through it. I'd work pretty hard at non-destructively clearing it out. Because ...

Changing the heater core is a big job. Most of the dash has to come out. Then the heater box has to be split to get to the core, fan, and the fan resistor. If you are in that far, replace all of them.
