W115 diesel engine options

Hi All,

A mate has recently imported a w115 220d from California.Although a solid car,it's a non runner, and on inspection it has broken a camshaft mount.I've pulled the head to find No.1 piston has rotated enough for the injector to beat it up a bit.I suspect a broken con rod or failed big end cap,but wondered if a replacement engine might be a better idea.
My question is,what can i fit without too many mods? Will a 300d from a w123 fit ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Ed

Nice project.
Can you buy W123 engine easy?
If you are up into big project, consider new generation diesel.
There is UK owner posting on W210 section where he put newer diesel in W124 body.
It is not a small project by any means as you car doesn't have reluctor rings, but if you do it, you will have a car that will have performance, economy and will keep you smiling for next 40 years.

There is a 300d with an autobox for sale not too far away, taken from a S123 with 250.000 miles on it. I have heard it run ,just not sure if it's worth buying or if it's too much work to make it fit in the 114/115 .Autobox is no good to me,so would only be using the engine.
