W210 e300td turbo control

Having some difficulty getting a straight answer. Not much on Google and seems to be too "noob" of a question for much response on 606 forum.

On my 98, the boost is controlled by a vacuum signal to the wastegate via solenoid.

On my old 2001 cdi (om613) the boost is controlled by vacuum signal to vane actuator via the same p/n solenoid.

Unless the signals are mirrored, would the 606 be able to control the vnt turbo?

Failing that, would swapping in a more modern turbo simply require swapping the stock wastegate actuator to the new turbo, or running a pressure wastegate and tuning out the turbo control vis reflash, as you would bypass the egr?

Modern turbo has variable fins, when older one has wastegate.
Totally different animals, so I don't see how the marriage could be possible.
Regardless the question would be to computer programmers, so good luck with it.

They are no so different in my view, they both compress air.
One has a wastegate that closes to increase turbine speed and hence boost pressure. The other has variable vanes or nozzles that, when fed the same vacuum signal, open or close to increase or decrease boost.
Input (vacuum signal) and output (change in boost pressure) are the same, the computer doesn't know or care if a wastegate or variable turbine are doing the action. I suspect they have different operating parameters (ie, at cruise condition x wastegate may be fully open where vnt turbo is 80%) but the basic operation is the same, more vacuum= more boost, no vacuum = no boost.

turbo

If I am not mistaken, the wastegate on a 606 controlled by a vacuum solenoid, not an electronic signal, so they would not be compatible.

The wastegate on an OM613 is also controlled via vacuum signal, through a channel on the transmission computer, just like the OM606.
It's on the next generation OM648 (as in the w211 e320cdi) that changed to electronic turbo control.
