Reduced Braking Power - 2006 CLS350

Hi all,

I hope somebody can shed some light on the following issue I encountered yesterday.

I switched off my vehicle last night and turned off the heating and radio. I remained seated in the vehicle for around 20 minutes waiting for a shop to open. All electrics were turned off.

All of a sudden an error popped up on my dual screen in red stating 'REDUCED BRAKING POWER. START ENGINE' and 'ESP DEFECTIVE, VISIT WORKSHOP'. These errors continued cycling with an audible tone.

I assumed it may have been because I was sat in the vehicle for a prolonged period of time and may have resulted in reduced or increased pressure in the braking system. I fully depressed the brake pedal a number of times in anticipation the error would clear but it didn't.

I did not start the engine and proceeded to visit the store hoping it would clear when I returned.

Upon returning and unlocking the car, the red error with a STOP sign appeared. When switching on the engine anl loud audible beep kept repeating with the error message 'REDUCED BRAKING POWER. DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL FULLY!'. With a STOP sign at the top.

'ESP DEFECTIVE. VISIT WORKSHOP' and 'TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR DEACTIVATED' also appeared before starting the engine.

The orange ABS light and handbrake lights are permanently glowing even when the handbrake has been released.

There is a noticeable reduction in braking power when driving.

I won't have a chance to take the vehicle to the garage until Monday due to work (I cycle to work anyway) but I am really concerned this may turn into a large bill and would like some input to put my mind at ease (hopefully!)

Has anyone experienced this issue? What are your thoughts?

Your help is very much appreciated!

Hassan

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your car model and year, and your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

Your car has a brake-by-wire system called SBC (Sensatronic Brake Control). This uses an electric motor to create brake fluid pressure instead of a traditional master cylinder and vacuum boost system. When it fails, you still have a tiny mechanically operated master cylinder, but it's about enough to stop a go-kart and not a 4,000lb+ vehicle. I know you are not in the USA as the CLS350 was not sold here, so I do not know if this applies to your country, but here, MBUSA has extended the SBC warranty to 25 years, unlimited mileage:
