buying a 03 CL600 with 77k miles a bad idea?
my name is Leo, I live in Orlando, FL. I'm new to the forum but I've used it a lot in the past to research my previous car.
I owned a 07 SL550 for the past 4 years and sold it a month or so ago and now I'm looking for a CL.
I always liked the V12s but I've been researching for several months now and I was almost settled on a 2010+ CL550 4MATIC because I'd get an extended warranty, specially because I'm looking at owning it for many years after it expires.
I ran into a 03 CL600 with 77k at a very good price and more importantly $20k-25k less expensive than a post face lift C216. I know tech wise there's no comparison but I really like the looks of the C215 and we are talking about the V12! So I'm not afraid to have to keep up with maintenance and fix expensive things every now and then.
My plan is to find out if the ignition coil packs have been replaced and if any maintenance on the ABC has been done. I think spark plugs have to be replaced around the 60 or 70k mark as well. I read somewhere that ABC was improved starting with 03 models, is that right? I had to replace the pump on my SL but in general it wasn't a horrible experience at all. Anything else major I'm missing here? If everything checks out I'll take it to a MB dealership for a pre buying inspection.
Assuming there are no records is there any point in taking it to the inspection? is there any other way to tell if these major things have been done? or should I just walk away?
Assuming all the above is ok, what are the things that I'll most likely have to replace in the next few years? I'd drive it daily and put around 10k miles a year.
I know it's hard to tell, but would you say keeping this car long term will be a lot more expensive than a newer CL550 4MATIC? I'm interested in other opinions and hopefully hearing from owners as well.
Oh one other factor that might make a difference, I know a good independent shop so I don't have to take it ever again (hopefully) to a MB dealership.
Even if this car doesn't work out, I'm interested in all of the above to know if these V12s are an option or not.
Thanks in advance,
