tire sizes 4matic

Is it safe to use 245/40 R20s tires on front and 275/35R20 on the rear on 2011 CL 550 4matic

You have a w216, this is the w215 section.

Although your model is a W216 and this is the W215 forum, I like the question from a performance & safety perspective.

The standard tire size for your model is 255/45R18 but since you are asking about skinny tires on front and wide tires on back I am going to assume you have rims that the tires will fit on. This is the "race car" look, and theoretically might provide more traction on your rear wheels depending on a few factors. With that in mind, here are a few questions I would ask myself:

1. Will the rims fit onto the car with those size tires?
2. Are the tires rated for street or highway usage?
3. Are the back tires soft compound and the front tires hard compound? (if they're all the same then wider back tires won't make much of a difference)
4. Typically wider back tires experience less roll, which leads to better cornering performance
5. How fast do you plan on driving with it? That will influence the safety of it all...
