Stuck in Comfort mode-will not go into Sport

My CLK 550 Cab-just taken out of winter storage (had it up on flat stoppers and a battery tender for the winter), been driving it around for a couple weeks and tried to switch it into "S" sport, from "C". It apparently has an issue as it will not switch.
I did search and found a couple threads saying driving the car after a few hrs passed and it would work again-so far its still not going out of "C".
One other mentioned changing battery-don't think that's it as it starts fine.
I do have a Icarsoft scanner but don't see any codes.

any ideas on whats going on ?
Runs fine and seems to shift just fine as well, not a big deal but it would be nice to have it working.I have just 33k miles on it( ready for its third set of rear tires !)

thanks

Ok, hooked up the Icarsoft and went to Trans diag.
it threw two codes

DTC 0513 The CAN signal for start enable sent to the drive authorization system by transmission control is missing or invalid
and C429 No CAN message from Control unit N80 (think that was it)

any help appreciated

thanks

That error is probably related to low voltage. I'd clear it, drive it, and check again. Most likely the C/S switch itself is the culprit. Maybe some liquid was pilled on the center console and made its way into the switch?

Thanks Rodney-I was hoping you would reply,
I will clear it and take it for spin. Its not any liquid as I am very careful-perhaps form sitting since last Oct something like contacts in switch have deteriorated.
I am guessing the best way to access it it to pull the wood trim up after opening the ashtray door ,then away. Then remove the switch after I have that out.

thanks

Actually, pull the chrome trim from around the shift boot - it comes out with that. Unplug the wires and then you can snap the switch and PRNDL indicator panel out. Take it to the workbench and you can disassemble it (held together with plastic clips). If you've worked on electronic stuff like this before, it's very straightforward. If that sounds daunting, then by some CRC Electronic Contact Cleaner and spray it around the button until it;s soaked, then press the button several dozen times.

Be careful with the chrome trim ,,it is actually plastic and has tabs on each side that can break.
Another option is to prise the boot up and out of the trim, then reach under for the tabs and carefully pull on them and lift the chrome bezel up and out.
Also the boot needs to be treated with leather conditioner to stop it becoming too tight and causing the tabs to break.

Thanks to both of you,
I erased the codes and took it for a ride, still no luck getting it to go in "S" but seems to drive fine, down shifts when I get on it and upshifts ok..
I am going try and get that switch out and check the connections-take it apart. Is there a ele test to see if its working like a resistance value ?

I see the MB OEM ones are around $200 which is fine if thats what I have to do and of course it solves it.
Going to try and get it out and be sure connection is clean and tight.
thanks

I am not sure if the cluster display follows the mode switch when the car is stationary. I have only ever moved the mode switch while moving. The mode switch is S16/5.

Here is the circuit diagram of the ESL module control unit (N15/5). For USA models you must look inside box U630. Locate item E12.

Check between pin 6, brown wire (ground), and pin 4, white/green wire (switch output) to prove switch S16/5 operation.

I change the mode all the time while driving. If I need an extra boost I put it in S and then switch back to C when I am done.

It definitely works. It starts in 1st gear and the shift points are higher.

This is a 2009 CLK 350.

Yes, the cluster will display the C/S (or W/S on pre-2005r cars) regardless of gear, as long as the ignition is on.
