Steering Wheel Replacement.

The latest episode in my ongoing maintenance ,repair and restoration of my CLK55 has been the replacement of my steering wheel ,which had cracked and perished leather , especially on the top right due to sun and wear and tear.

I bought another from a wrecker , it looked the same and had the same gear shift buttons , so I thought even though it came from a R230 SL it would be fine.
Unfortunately I was wrong,,,behind the airbag MB had changed the electrical system for all the buttons and gear shift.
I had to swap the shifters from my old wheel , and install the junction box from my old wheel into the new one ,despite there being no bracket to hold it.
Luckily it has all worked out ok , the hardest part was undoing the main bolt ,,,I had to get my wife to push on the breaker bar while I held the wheel. 80 Nm ,,,maybe I am getting weak,,but you really need two people.
If I was doing it again though I would get a wheel from exactly the same model. It would certainly be a lot easier.

It's actually harder with two people! There is too much arm flex and it is hard to get torque on the bolt with all the movement.

Best to wedge a pipe (I use a baseball bat) thru the spoke of the wheel and have the other end resting on the door sill. Pad the pipe with a rag and make sure the steering wheel is unlock. With two hands free, you can steady the head of breaker bar with one hand and with a quick pull or push with the other, the bolt will "pop" loose easily.

Beautiful machine Benzyle, I love the color. We've the same alloys except mine don't have AMG stamp, and I see your center caps are black - is that factory or aftermarket?

Thanks miko ,,Yes the colour is very rare,,,I have never seen another w209 coupe in the same colour, jasper blue,,,let alone another Clk55,,,,almost every one over here is black, silver or also a few in a champaigne silver.
The centre caps that came on the car were mixed,,,so I replaced with new black,,,not genuine mb.
The wheels had the AMG stamp but it was silver like the wheels ,so I hand painted them in blue,,,also did the three strips on the engine cover..
I also repaired the front bumper and had the roof section resprayed in midnight blue..
Carried out a long list of maintenance items and small repairs or replacement of broken parts like seat memory switch, rear window regulator and more..
still more to do but it is driving and looking so much better than when i got it in August,2018. I enjoy fixing cars.

Looks really good Benzyle. Rare colour indeed, I've only seen it once in the flesh and also on an AMG spec - perhaps it's available for AMG only?

Nice touches with the wheels and engine, and yep, there's always something to be done if the car is a teenager but very rewarding if you enjoy the process. 👌😊
