1999 320 clk

Hi all,
Just jumped over from the 124 forum to ask if anybody can help with my wifes 208 issue.
The car occasionally (almost daily) at some point refuses to start, even after locking up and re entering. This can last for up to 10 mins.
Battery is really good and quite new.
My Maxiecu in the 38 pin socket some time ago came up with a description of an immobiliser fault. If I remember correctly something like low voltage at immobiliser.
Any clues, before she sets it on fire?

Thanks

When it refuses to start, do you mean you turn the key and nothing happens, or it turns over but will not start?

Does it do this when the car is warm/cold/random?

Just random.
The engine will crank very well but won't start.

Might also be crankshaft position sensor.

If you've got a good indy near you, it might be worth getting them to hook the car up to their STAR diagnostics.

They should be able to pinpoint the problem and save a lot of guesswork/money.

You might be spot on there Hawkwind.

Only just tonight I got round to having a look.

I searched e blag for a cps and wanted to check what type of plug/socket arrangement was on this model before I ordered a new one.
The plug on this one is 2 pin and rounded on one side. I say plug but actually the plug is a socket because the connections are female in it.
When I reached/found it I thought it would be difficult to remove the plug because of the snap teeth on either side but it came away without any effort at all. I tried to get it to snap in on re fitting but it doesn't final locate. It is as if the sensor has too long a neck for the plug teeth to reach.

Going to do a search now to see if maybe some p.o. has fitted the wrong sensor.

Boyd

CPS most common thing to go out with these engines and usually happens when engine is hot. A simple test is to poor cold water over the sensor and if it starts then you found the problem.

Ensure you get a legitimate Bosch replacement.

I have also heard that the problem is not stored in memory so diagnostics do not pick it up.

You have to squeeze the connector locking tab(s) to remove it.

Depending on when the W208 was produced, two different CPS sensors were used (e.g. one has 1 locking pin and the other has 2 locking pins).

Absolutely right there Serndipity.
It had the one with a single tab on the long side and should have had the one with 2 tabs on the short sides.
Looks like it has been a bodge by p.o.
The single tab had been partly cut off but in doing so meant the plug (socket) was free to move and cause the havoc.
I fitted the new one only yesterday (Sunday) so time will tell but I am confident this would have been the problem.
A lesson learned, something so simple, too bad the p.o. or his mechanic didn't buy the right one but then we got the car quite cheaply so maybe this is why it was sold?

No, my Maxiecu didn't show a recorded fault either Rory.

Thanks all.
