W208 CLK Convertible Top Cable Replacement DIY

Got my new cables in the mail and decided to take some pictures. I could have taken more and been more thorough but I got busy and forgot. I haven't seen any pictures of this process though so I hope it helps someone else too. This cable replacement is on a 2002 CLK320. The first picture shows the broken cable on the driver's side of the car.

The next step is to remove the plastic cover located at the front of the convertible top. This is done by removing the allen screw that holds the twist handle to the top (don't remember the size) but it was small. You must twist the handle to be able to insert the allan wrench into the fitting. Then remove the four screws that line the front of the plastic cover.

Here's a pic of the twist handle and the allen screw that you must remove to take the front plastic molding off. I found this was easiest when the top was folded all the way back.

So after you get the cover off, unbolt the silver nut shown in the center of this picture. It is attached directly to the cable's front connection. KEEP THE NUT! I think it was a 10mm. Again this picture is of driver's side and this portion I did with the roof half-raised.

The cable lays in a trough of fabric built into the roof and I found it easy to attach the new cable to the old cable and pull the new through the trough as I removed the old.

When you look at the cross-bar that the rear connection attaches to, you will see in the following picture the hole that the cable goes into. I failed to get a picture of the plastic sleeve that the cable goes into to keep it in the cross-bar. It is a 2 piece, T-shaped sleeve, and you must be careful not to drop it into the roof-top abyss. I gently pulled it out with a pair of pliers and then inserted the cable's rear connector into the hole shown in the pic. Split the T-sleeve in half, lay the cable between the 2 halves, and then squeeze them together again. Then, slide the T-sleeve with the cable inside into the rear hole of the cross-bar.

Then insert the front connection of the cable into the front attachment and find that 10mm nut I told you to keep and snug it up.

The final steps took me a while. Lay the plastic front cover back on the convertible top. I found this easiest when the top was laid all the way back. Then attach the twist handle. There is an outer ring around the handle that you must push down to be able to get the allen screw to line up with the hole again. So, you must place the handle in place, twist it, and push the outer ring with your other hand to get the hole lined up. Maybe having a friend would make it easier, but I finally got it done. One side took me over an hour, but I'm sure I could do the other side in 30 minutes. Hope it helps.

That seems a huge cable to simply break.... Did yours rust through?

No what usually happens is there is a knob crimped to the end of the cable and the cable separates from that knob. It is similar to a throttle cable for a lawn mower or bicycle brake cable with the knob on the end of it.
