I purchased my first Mercedes this year, and as it's a W124 (16 years old) I was keen to find the right specialist garage to help me look after it.
After much searching, some phone calls and some recommendations I chose Automerc in North London. They are a long established business: the head mechanic is the son of the founder of the garage and so has grown up with Mercedes - a young man but more experienced than most. His business partner Ivan is the man to speak to front of house - a helpful and friendly guy.
The workshop was a comforting sight - Mercedes of all kinds, with an emphasis on 70's, 80's and 90's cars when I visited. I also know that at least one well regarded specialist dealer has used them for looking after his own car, and recommends them highly.
The first job I requested was a thorough inspection, I wanted a full picture of the condition of my car. Automerc found all the faults I had known about, some I had completely missed, and equally importantly for my peace of mind they also gave some items on my check list a clean bill of health when it would have been all to easy to report them as faulty.
Ivan was patient and helpful in explaining the faults, repairs and costs, and also in suggesting which items could be safely left alone for now in favour of more important work. I found him helpful and polite, quick to respond to emails and calls. He also agreed a schedule of work to a budget I set, and agreed to make numerous small repairs at the same time as the major jobs required. It is, in my experience, very unusual to receive that kind of attention to detail - not many workshops will go out of their way to replace dash lightbulbs, cure a squeaky wiper, adjust a headlight or pay attenton to the small things that do really make a difference to the way the car feels. Another nice touch was Ivan's willingness to send me photos of the work in progress, and of some of the damaged parts they'd replaced.
All work was carried out as promised, nothing was missed, all has been well with their workmanship since. I found no scratches or damage to the car, or dirt in the interior anywhere when I picked it up.
As you can tell, I had a very good experience with this firm. It's always hard paying a big bill for your car, but they made it as pleasant as possible, and I certainly felt I'd had my money's worth from them as I drove away. It is possible to get slightly cheaper labour rates in London, but there's no way I would have received such good service or had access to so much Mercedes experience elsewhere. In short, I will be using them from now on for all my servicing and repairs, and I am happy to recommend them to any Mercedes driver in London who wants their classic Benz looked after properly by honest and reliable people.
