OEM Video Entertainment System A step by step guide for all ML VES installations

The following are some basic instructions on how to install the MB OEM Video Entertainment System in a 2001 ML-320. The instructions are the same for all pre ‘02 versions. The ’02 and above instructions are pretty much the same with the exception of changes to the rear ashtray location but I included the MB WIS #’s below where applicable.
The obvious disclaimers … don’t do this unless you are very comfortable working on your own vehicle. I used to work in an auto-upholstery shop as a teen, and I am now a very anal engineer that reads the manuals and instructions before doing anything technical. This was a big job that took me about seven hours to complete start to finish (including cleaning the interior). I probably spent and equal amount of time getting all the work instructions together and reading & understanding them before starting the job. Don’t do this unless you really like tearing into your nice, beautiful ML!
Tools required:
Pop rivet gun
MCS (or radio) removal tool
Torx T15, T20, & T25 drivers
Drill with a 3/16” (sharp) drill bit
Center punch
Wire cutters
A very sharp Exacto knife for cutting the headliner and carpet (oh my god!)
7/16” 12 point socket for removing the 40% rear seat and two back 60% rear seat bolts
Loctite 242 or equivalent for the seat bolts
Lots of screwdrivers and ratchet … powered screwdriver and air ratchet will save time and knuckles
Lots of soap and water to clean your hands before you touch the headliner
Lots of time and patience …
VES instructions required:
AZ82.60-P-0004B Retrofit Vehicle Video (this is the main one that describes the others)
AZ82.60-P-0004-01B Central Interface Module (CIM)
AZ82.60-P-0004-02C Video Monitor
AZ82.60-P-0004-03A Auxiliary Interface Wiring Harness (-03B for 2002+)
AZ82.60-P-0004-04A Auxiliary Interface Module (-04B for 2002+)
AZ82.60-P-0004-05A Video Player
AZ82.60-P-0004-06A Voltage Supply for CIM
I have created a website where you can download these WIS and the support WIS for the install. If you are doing the install for MY2002+ you will also need the specific WIS for those MYs. The website is located at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~phdwebsite/
These are .pdf files so you will need some form of Adobe Acrobat to read and print the files. Enough of that, here goes …
You need to remove the 40% rear seat and trim plates, 60% seat trim plates, center console, Center console insulating mat, rear air duct, skuff molding, upper portion of both right side door rubber seals (to free the pillar moldings and headliner), both “B” pillar moldings, the “A” pillar molding, the right front passenger grab rail, passenger sun visor, glove box, lower edge guard for sunroof opening, and right passenger foot well fuse cover. When you are done you will have an impressive mess that looks like this.

This is a picture of all of the stuff you are going to install.

The rear passenger area will look like this.

The center console area like this.

And the glove box opening like this

The first step is to assemble the central interface module and cables. The three coiled cables to the right are for the VCP, DVD (if installed), and auxiliary module. The blue cable is for the VCP and the red for the DVD. The extra box on top of the CIM is the FM modulator that allows the sound to play through the radio. It gets mounted with Velcro already installed on the top of the CIM. It has two antenna cables on it that get installed serially to the existing antenna cable on the back of the MCS (or radio). The upper cable goes to the video display.

The entire CIM module is located on the metal shelf below the glove box with Velcro and some additional foam to keep it from rattling around. The video display cable gets routed to the right up towards the “A” pillar. The remaining cables all get routed to the left under the MCS. Note that anywhere you see white sleeves on the cables is where they should get attached with either foam tape or Ty-Wraps (all supplied). The arrow shows one. Also, there is an iron torroid on the VCP cable that gets mounted to the lower left glove box support bar. If you follow the instructions and do the wiring right everything lines up amazingly well!!

Next step is the power wiring. A relay/fuse module gets installed in position 7 in the passenger foot well (see right most arrow). A fuse holder gets mounted above. And a ground wire gets attached to the terminal at the bottom. All wires are routed up to the CIM and a noise isolation transformer gets installed inline from the fuse block and is Ty-Wrapped to the lower right glove box support. It’s already comes wrapped in lots of foam. This all goes to the power connecter on the left of the CIM. Don’t install the two fuses until the very last (yes the battery can stay connected). And don’t short that 70amp fuse!!

Next step is to remove the MCS (or radio) using removal keys (you can by them from the MB dealer for less than $10). The antenna wire is removed (lower left of MCS, from the rear) and connected to the FM modulators matching connector seen at the lower right opening. This connection is wrapped with foam tape to keep it from rattling around. The remaining FM modulator cable (the white one) is connected to the MCS and the MCS reinstalled.

Now the VCP and DVD cable can be run under the carpet behind the center console. The carpet is slit in two places under where the air duct is located and a “T” cut made under the seat. The WIS give specific dimensions for cutting. The two cables are then routed under the carpet. This was a lot harder than it looked. The carpet is very stiff and glued in place. I needed to pry it up with some tire irons then used a fish tape to route them underneath. You can see the two cables in the seat mount opening and the auxiliary cable lying across the tunnel (to be connected later).

The air duct is reinstalled and the three cables attached to the top of it using the (supplied) foam tape as shown. This foam tape is great stuff and is used lot’s of places! It keeps everything from rattling around after the install.

The two 60% seat rear-mounting bolts are removed and the metal VCP locating bar installed with the same bolts. Use Loctite on these and all seat bolts when you reinstall them.

This is a picture of the VCP and the two under seat covers that replace the one’s originally removed. They have been modified to clear the VCP when in place.

The VCP is installed by sliding it from the front towards the rear. There is a pin that catches the wedge opening in the locating bar you just installed then the front VCP bracket is locked down over the front frame rail. They even supply a strip of 3M clear protective tape to place over the frame rail to make sure it won’t rattle around!!. You can see the blue VCP wire attached to the side of the VCP and the red DVD wire above. I don’t have the DVD yet. A pinch bracket is installed to the left of the VCP over the seat release cable so that the seat cannot be folded down while the VCP is in place. It takes about 20 seconds max to remove the VCP then the seat can be folded flat to the floor.

This picture shows the VCP in place from the rear.

The auxiliary module is installed in the rear ashtray location after removing the plastic tray insert. Two screws hold it in place. The spring clip is routed between the plate and the PCB underneath it. The center console can then be reinstalled and the auxiliary cable connected. Again, foam tape is applied to the connector and Ty-Wrapped into place to keep it from rattling around. The module is where the (included) headsets are connected if you don’t want to play sound through the vehicle speakers and there are standard RCA adapters for A/V inputs from a game, camera, whatever you want to use. They think of everything!

I apologize profusely for the next steps but I was in a hurry to get the display mounted before having to pick up pizza and didn’t take any pictures at this part. Daniel has sent me one of the headliner cutout, when he did his install, which is included below. It was actually pretty easy to do and the WIS instructions were great. The mounting plate shown below with the display is used as a template for cutting the headliner.
The bracket is placed upside down and backwards at the rear opening of the sunroof and centered. You then trace where shown on the template and cut that section out as shown below. No I didn’t dye my headliner for this shot. Daniel’s headliner is tan! Thanks Daniel!!

The display cable is run up the “A” pillar and above the headliner then kind of looped around back to the opening to clear the sunroof guide rails. The harness is held in place with the foam tape in several locations up the pillar and across the headliner. The bracket gets turned over and around and inserted from front to rear in the opening. There are metal tabs that locate it to the sunroof cross member. Five 3/16” holes are drilled into the member using the template/mount as a drill guide then pop riveted into place as shown below.

The harness is connected to the display (more foam tape) and the display screwed in place with four Torx screws. When you are done it should look like this. You then reinstall all of the molding, glove box, 40% seat, etc.

You install the two fuses in the passenger foot well, turn the ignition to the ON position, and lower the display. It should turn on automatically. The system can then be user programmed with the included IR remote to one of the ten selectable radio stations you want to use to play the sound on. Remember this is a direct connect FM Modulator so the sound is excellent! The sound can be muted from a switch located on the front end of the display (by a parent) or with the remote from the rear. There is also a power override on the front that allows a parent to shut the whole thing down. The kids will never ask “are we there yet” again while “Annold” is saying “I’ll be bakk”!

That’s it. If you have any questions let me know.
