GL vs. ML

How does the GL differ from the ML other then size? Is the build quility better and how are sales thus far?

Thanks

GL and new ML are both unibody, however GL is a 7 seater. i would consider GL as a bigger version of new ML

you can still buy old good ML built within 1998-2005 period.. eg mine 99 ML320 is a seven seater.. ML + GL in one sort of thing...

The GL has more horsepower (about 30), but since it's a larger vehicle it's not as quick as the ML500. The interiors are about the same layout with similar instrument clusters.

The GL posts 0 to 60 in the mid 6's just like the ML. I'd say they are about the same in the quickness department.

MBUSA reports 0 to 60 for the GL around 7.4 seconds but MotorTrend, Car and Driver and Edmunds all reported mid 6's (6.4 to 6.7).

I've seen 6.3 to 6.7 reported for the ML500.

The ML uses the older generation 3 valve per cyl 5.0L 305hp engine. The GL is smaller in displacement at 4.6L but uses a 4 valve per cyl head and 335hp.

My wife's '05 S500 has the old 5.0L and our new GL has the new 4.6L. The 4.6L is a quite a bit snappier, pulls hard and is silky smooth like a V6. The 5.0L pulls strong as well but lacks the snappiness that the GL has and is a little lumpier (for lack of a better word) like a V8 should be.

Much better from long distance driving than the ML
Stiffer frame
Thicker glasses etc.

Sales are better than those from the ML

I drive an 02 ML500 (W163), and drove a new GL450. The GL generally feels bigger, higher, etc. The interior feels more roomy too. Its basically a bigger ML. I'm not sure how it compares to the W164 ML's because I havent driven one of those (but I guess it would be similar).

I personally would probably take the ML over the GL because its a bit sportier.
