Hi,

I have just joined to ask for advice on my problem. To be brief, I own a motorhome on a Mercedes 616 chassis with the 2.7, 5 cylinder engine. Whilst on holiday in Spain this June, the engine packed up. The garage in Spain stripped it down and found a holed number 5 piston with damage to the bore.

I had a new engine fitted at a cost of 11,000 euros. I contacted Mercedes on my return to the UK and to be fair, they replied to all my letters, emails. But I had their final letter the other day stating that they wll not help towards the new engine costs. The reasons they gave were: it had a chip fitted (which I was unaware of), the age of the vehicle and has had 2 owners. The vehicle is a 2003 and had done 78,000 KM.

Can I ask whether this is a known problem with this engine and also any other advice would be appreciated.

I take it you purchased the motorhome privately and have no dealer warranty. This is probably the main reason why we purchased our 2003, 313CDI in Australia from a motorhome dealer they offer a 3 month/3000Km warranty that hopefully will (and did) sort out any problems.

If you look at the engine on the plus side, you now have a reliable engine that should go over 400,000kms. Future Holidays: No worries.
