Idling the V6 Sprinter Engine for extended periods

I am puchasing a Great West 2009 Sprinter and was told that the diesel engine was quieter than the Onan propane generator. So, with a large inverter, I could run the roof AC off the coach batteries with the engine running and not use the Onan propane generator. I realize that diesel trucks are idled for hours on time in cold climates but has anyone reading the forum used their diesels in the way I have described??
