Hi,
I have a problem with my van (1999 310d) which is doing my head in.
It has been to various mechanics including lucas and we still cant figure it out.
The problem is when cold it smokes badly (black) and runs bad, this clears up as it gets to normal running temp but then smokes badly at high revs (60 mph +).
I have replaced the head gasket, had the fuel pump re-sealed, checked the injectors + glow plugs, replaced the fuel filter and checked the fuel line connectors.
The diagnostic equipment at lucas came up with fuel pump timeing but i have played about with this with no results, better or worse.
I have also tested the advance solenoid which appears to be working.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
Yours hopefully.
James.
Yes i have finaly found the problem!
The shaft connecting the fuel pump to the cam chain has two bearings which when worn throw out the timing. Unfortunatly the part cost £250 and its a bit arkward to get at. also one of the bearings on mine has actualy broken up and i now have the fun of emptying my engine of bits of bearing! oh joy.
