Exclamation Problem with sprintshift box

I have a 316cdi with sprint shift, the problem is that occasionaly it will jump out of gear, this only happens when pulling away and therefore only when in first gear. The rest of the time the box behaves and has no other faults.
Had the van into local dealer today who charged me 1 hrs labour to tell me they dont know whats wrong, other than it could be the gear lever postion switch, but they dont have one and couldnt say for sure this was at fauilt.

Now what Id like to know is if anyone else has had this problem or has any one stripped one of these boxes? Is there anything to watch out for etc.
Many Thanks

Thanks rufus, the sprintshift box is a fully electronic controlled manual box, the gear lever can be used to change gear or placed in auto mode, there is no clutch pedal, the clutch is opporated by means of a hydraulic ram again all computer controlled. The gears are selected by a servo pack on the side of the box again using hydraulic fluid from the electric motor run hydraulic pump.

Your correct the sprntshift gearbox is a manual gearbox that is operated by a hydraulic shift module. In saying that if you had a manual gearbox that jumped out of gear where would you think the problem would be?

If the Instrument cluster is displaying A or 1st gear depending on how you are driving the vehicle, then this is telling you that the shift mechanism is selecting 1st gear.

I would suggest that 1st gear is damaged, that would explain why the vehicle operates correctly once in other gears.

Remember that it is still only a manual gearbox....

Hi i have had this same problem with a Sprinter 208 sprintshift gearbox, MB say there is no problem and its a simple comnnector that causes the problems, but as i have had four near misses with cars and pedestrians due to the gears jumping out when crossing busy junctions and on a harbour wall it is very serious.

I drive from a wheelchair and rely on the sprinter 100% for my mobility, this fault results in you having no control of the vehicle when it starts jumping in and out of gears for no reason, New years day i was recovered from Weston where the sprinter problem re occured again whilst manouvering in a car park which is where i almost ran down some pedestrians purely due to the gearbox violently engadging and disengadging.

MB refuse to accept there are others with the same problem yet i have found 5 others on the internet with the same problem?

Hi all, gearbox fault has got very bad now, jumps out of 1st every second pull away. So had to book back in with MB dealer (mon12/2/07) who are going to strip the box. Will keep you posted with whats found and costs.
I would have stripped the box myself but have been told once the electronics are disconected the box has to be re-trained using MB only computer link!!

Success all fixed, took dealer 4 days not the quoted 2 but had allready pinned them down to a price of 10hrs @ £60/hr. The parts that had failed/worn out were the first and second sincro's, bulk rings and selector dogs. All the parts together cost £314 and the labour was £600 so £914+VAT and all done.
If any one wants more info ie part numbers or pics of the parts let me know.
