I would go with a manual myself... just read of all the auto transmission problems folks have been having on this forum - if I saw a Sprinter with an auto box I would run away screaming in blind panic
Its a conventional auto box with the option of sequensial gear changes on the gear lever, your right sprint shift has been dropped and the only way to get it is to buy an LT as that's who merc have sold it to!!
The new auto box however is soposed to be very good ie smooth gear changes etc.
When you get your new van please email me as id love to speak to you with your impressions as I to will be replacing my 316cdi (sprintshift) soon and have been looking at the 318 auto.
The 722.6 5 speed fully automatic gearbox is fitted behind the OM642 V6 Engine that you have purchased. The V6 Engine is pretty much the same engine that is fitted all the MB passenger cars and even some Jeep / Chrysler products.
The 722.6 is a proven gearbox and very reliable as long as the services are carried out with the correct oil spec 236.10
Thanks for your comments, but sounds as if you have had some bad things with Auto boxes, not sure what problems you have had, but from other comments I think it is the sprint-shift that they have had the problems with.
as you will have read and as I was hoping that the box they are fitting is a diffrent story.

Hi Guys,
We bought a new 315CDI in November (new model) with the manual gearbox. My independent benz mechanic advised against the sprint-shift. A pal of his is a courier driving with the sprint-shift and has had to be rescued from the hard-shoulder a couple of times in the past 3 months. It seems to stick in first gear and refuse to budge. Not to say this is a common problem, but it put me off. I would like to have got the 318 but it wasn't available here in November. The 315 is nice, we're happy with it, but the fuel economy isn't as good as I expected, I'm probably driving it a bit hard!
