My Mercedes Sprinter 1995 208D (no turbo) van collects a small amount of engine oil in the radiator expansion tank. This oil is always floating on top, and the coolant remains clear.
The oil on the dip stick, and the oil and workings inside the cylinder head are all clear, no gunge or white stuff.
Is this the early signs of the head gasket going, or something else, like a pipe leaking oil into the coolant system somewhere?
Any advice greatly received.
It may be your head gasket - I would keep an eye on it since small amounts of water my simply be evaporating and going out through your exhaust. I can't think of where oil could get into your expansion tank otherwise as it would require the oil pressure to be greater than the coolant pressure.. Hmmm...
Check the back of the cylinder head on the drivers side for signs of oil leaking down the block. This is normally the first sign of the head gasket going but might be worth while having the oil cooler tested ? If on the passenger side at the back of the engine. Does it blow smoke ?
The 208 Sprinter is a great van it just lack abit of power ?
