engine oil capacity

I have changed the oil on my car now 3 times, and I know that the pan holds somewhere around 9 to 10 quarts. The first time I changed it I put in 9 quarts, I wasnt sure. The second time I put in 8 quarts, and this time I put in 7 quarts. I drained the oil with the car being leveled to make sure that all the oil was out. The dash says that it doesnt need any oil even after 7 quarts in the pan. Do I need to add all 10 quarts? I also noticed that there was oil sludge were you add the oil. It wasnt burnt , but a thick like paste or better yet malt. Has anyone noticed this when adding oil. At what point does the level say to add oil-how many quarts 5 to 6 quarts. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks

If you are talking of R350 Mercedes, it takes 8.5 US quarts of Synthetic oil. This is what is recommended by the Mercedes Benz. Recommended synthetic oil is Mobil 1. I use Mobil 5-40 or 0-4o.

Regarding oil sludge, thick paste like malt, I did not understand your question. Did you find it in the bottom of the new synthetic oil or in the draining oil.

I never measure the new or used oil as that is a waste of time and its very dirty. I suggest you to fill up the oil until it is one the "high" mark then start the engine. Usually it will go down a little, refill it up to the "high" mark again and it should be fine.

Owners manual specifies oil change quantity. It's ridiculous to consider this a "mystery." Need a manual? 800.for.merc

There is some tendancy to create a "milkshake pudding" in the the oil filler tube. This is mixture of oil and water, mostly from humidity.

Say you have a 2.3 engine or a 3.2 engine. Is that called engine size ? engine capacity ? Vince R170 SLK Class 4 11-01-2001 09:14 PM
