I thought I would resurrect this thread because i have a similar problem with a 2001, 400Cdi engine.
The car will sart and run OK and then, usually within 15 minutes, the engine will stall, whist driving, without warning. Trying to restart the engine will usually see it run for 3 seconds before stopping again with the EPC (Electronic Power Control... Visit Workshop) error on the dash. It can take between 10 minutes and 12 hours to successfully restart the engine. From then, if the car is used every day, it will tend to be fine, but if left for a day or two, then it's back to the same problem. The battery, fuel filter, MAF sensor have been replaced and the wiring to the ECU checked.
I don't have the specifications of your motor but if it is similar to the 3.0L in the R Class than you should read my replies to this post.
Hard starts or no starts are a direct relationship with no fuel. When it is cold I bet is starts better, right? What about the level of fuel in the tank? Is it full or is it 1/4 full? Has the pump been pulled and inspected? What about the intake screen on that pump?
I am going to suggest that your lift pump (the pump in the tank) is dead or dying and this is effecting the fuel delivery to the injection pump.

Mine had exactly same problem. Dealer replaced this low pressure pump and all was fixed...save they did a sloppy job putting the interior of the car back together and my interior has had a diesel smell ever since (right after start up in the morning). Me thinks they forgot a gasket or something.
