I noticed new 2009 R350 is now available in the USA (in Canada not offerred yet - at least not on the website). One very interesting thing for me is - it offers a hitch package (I assume factory installed) for about 500 bucks - it's about time MB woke up to customers' requests.
Now here is my question - from general description other than cosmetics and different options 2009 model looks about the same as 2006. So what happened to the "not recommended for towing" statement that MB maintained for all these years (I even got an email from MB Canada threatening to void my warranty if I tow with my vehicle...). Is the tranny any different (any program updates or cooler installed)? Did they upgrade the engine? And finally is the vehicle built on different frame (someone suggested once that R can "sepparate" if towing large loads).
If anyone has some insight into this I'd appreciate your input. Oh by the way - 2009 R is now rated for 3500 lbs towing.

That's easy--up to now they hadn't done the engineering. No engineering = no appoval.
Be sure to order the hitch for $500 factory installed because it will cost $2000 dealer retrofitted.
Might want to check the kit information to see if retrofit to older models is permitted.
Is the difference in cost simply dealer labor or are there different components to each package. As for me, I'd need about 3000lbs towing if available (R350 4MATIC).

MB website stated 3500 LBS towing. That is equipvalent weight of a compact car.
