2008 R350 4matic Mobil1 Oil?

Hey guys, tell me what you think.
What do you think about putting 5w40 SUV Mobil1 in my new R350?
The dealership is offering only the 5w40 ESP formula. Autozone sells them for way cheaper.
What is the difference?
I talked to a Mobil1 tech guy and he said "it is different formula".
I asked about putting the 5w 40 in and he says I dont think that is "recommended for Mercedes in the manual". I said you were right but the dealership are recommending it. He said I dont know why they would say that if the manual says something different. He says only go by the manual. Nobody knows what they are talking about. In Maimi, FL MB dealership says 0w40 just last week and now a Southern CAli dealership says 5w40 esp formula that only dealerships and main distrubutors are selling at 6.99 a quart.

Tell me what you guys think.

for engines that do not have emissions related oil requirements, as long as it is within the manual specified correct SAE weight range, you are fine. Check your manual...

Don't mess around with any oil that's not on Mercedes approved list. Is it really worth it use a non-approved oil to save $20 - $30 (assuming you save $2-3 per qt with an 8-qt fill) an oil change that you only need to do 1-2x a yr on a $40,000+ vehicle with the potential risk of voiding the warranty down the road? Here is what's approved for the Mercedes gasoline engines manufactured after 2005; they can be found online if you can't find them locally:

Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40
Pennzoil European Formula Ultra 5W-30
Quaker State European Formula Ultra 5W-30 X
Castrol Syntec European Formula 0W-30
Elf Excellium 0W-30
