After the last service on our R, the tech said our brake pads (front and back) are getting low (20-25% left).
While I don't mind doing this type of work myself, I was wondering if anyone had changed out their pads yet.
I would like to get something that doesn't throw off as much dust as the factory pads - the wheels look horrible after a few days from clean!

While I personally have no experience with them, EBC sells pads called "Redstuff", which are a performance ceramic pad, that should dust a lot less than the OEMs. They are also about 2/3 the price. Google them - many of the mail order warehouses carry them and EBC is a well-regarded manufacturer.
get a second opinion I am sure brake job from the stealer I mean dealer isn't cheap. Check them out yourself. I though all benz had brakes for at least 100k. I have a astro that I pulled a trailer for 100k and the brake pads are still about half. All you have to do is pull the wheels.... Just make sure the car is leveled and you are using a good floor jack.... I screwed up my bmw door after only having it for a few weeks. Wife got a flat on the side of the road put on the spare and when I when to put on the right wheel car slipt off the bmw jack and dented the door..... There should be a metal sensor when you get close it will scratch the hell out of the rotors telling you now need brakes and rotors. I dont think you need brakes... You might already now all this. And it is not a sensor put a metal prong... I dont know what it is called but you will see it... I know my bmw has a electrical sensor on the pads that when they get low it cuts the wire creating a open circuit and light up the brake light on the dash. sensor is only 3 dollars a piece.. Check them out....

There are two different "low brake" devices out there. One is a "scraper", which, as you point out, makes a metallic screeching noise when the pads are almost completely worn. I saw this on an American car years ago; don't know which manufacturer still uses this. None of the imports I've worked on (Alfa Romeo, Honda, Audi, BMW) have ever had this device. I am 99.9% certain Mercedes doesn't use this, as they use the same brake manufacturer as BMW (ATE), who uses the electric sensor you point out. Check your owner's manual -- if a warning message or light is supposed to come on when pads are worn, then there is a sensor embedded in the pads (usually in a groove). It's been a while since I've read the Mercedes manual, but I'm pretty sure they have this feature. I believe it is virtually standard on luxury cars and has been for years (I first saw this feature in the late 1980s).
The car has near 40k miles on it. We are the 2nd owner, so no idea how the first owner drove it (although I do know it was the local dealers wifes car for a year - so I don't really expect it to be beaten like a rental).
Anyway, I haven't asked for a price from the dealer, but I'm sure it'd be very expensive.
I'll check the manual for a sensor light for pads. I'm too lazy to pull a wheel off to check the pads - haha
I will say that I waxed the rims and the brake dust is infintely easier to get off the car now - a little trick someone told me about and it works great!

I've checked manual-- there is a warning indicator on the display between the speedometer and the tach when the pads need replaced.
