Both side buttons shift up and down. Inwards is down, outwards is up
That appears to be the case with certain model years. I recall some confusion in the W164 or X164 sections about the shift button controls as some people had rocker buttons and others regular buttons.
Thanks for the info, I'll have to try that on my ML.
No problem, my dealer did not know it either. The specialist that walked thru the functions before we got the car told us to push the up button untill "D" was displayed in the gear selector.
I do not know if it works on all MB cars. but on 2008 R-Class it works
Just a hint, if you push and hold the "up" shift button for ~2-3 sec, it will go straight into D, you do not need to hurdle thru all gears
Thank you -- had no idea! I keep learning about "hidden" features from other owners... not enough time to go go through that huge owner's manual (which could easily be cut down to a 1/4 of its size without losing anything...).

Thats how the rocker buttons on back of steering wheel work on the ML too.

You downshift with left paddle, upshift with right. Center display, between speedo and odo, indicates which gear you are in. Normally it says "D". But say you are going down a steep hill and want to use the engine to help brake, hit the left paddle. If the transmission was, for example, in 5th gear, it will indicate D4 after you hit the paddle once. Keep tapping the left paddle, and it will go to D3 then D2 then D1. If you are in D4 and want to go back into the normal automatic mode, you need to tap the right paddle 3 times: D5, D6, and then it will say D when it's back in automatic. If it indicates anything from D1 - D6 you are in manual mode. Sounds confusing, but it's actually pretty straightforward. The only thing I don't like is it's too easy to brush your fingers across the left paddle when you are steering, putting the vehicle inadvertantly into a lower gear.
You can up/down shift with both the left and the right shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel. comes in very handy after some getting used to it, if you use manual mode a lot.
If you turn off the trac control (as much as you can), in manual you can get the back of the 350 to step out in 1st and 2nd pretty easily. Also helps if it's wet from rain, makes it much easier. But it is hard to control as even with the traction off, it's never really off and you have to fight with it constantly.
But it is possible to get a nice donought.

2nd place...is just the first loser.
When autocrossing, starting in D2 holds the car in that gear until the engine hits the rev limiter. It'll upshift to the next higher gear. Works the same with older cars as well (C320, SL500).
