$2.90 per gallon gas in China = 40% increase in demand for SUV's and Luxury Cars
Daimler says Mercedes sales in China surged 42 percent in the first quarter. Sales of R-class minivans jumped 110 percent while those of M-, G- and GL-class SUVs doubled. The company says China is the second-biggest market for its S-class sedans, behind only the United States, and accounts for one-third of global Mercedes sales.

In terms of MB's I saw mostly S-classes (usually black or silver) in China when I was there for a couple weeks in November 2006.

Please dont call the R class a minivan Anyway this Class is becoming much more popular in china, but the favourites are still S then E and I feel C is actually loosing ground. The R Class is becoming more popular because it has the star and is a people mover, ie you can get the whole family in it. Lets face it the chinese are family orientated so the R is a natural for those who want face and a family transporter
In our workshop the majority is the W220, W221 and W210 followed by the R Class
My family has a R 300 (R280 in EU) in Zhu Hai (LHD) for the factory, and a E 280 and a ML 55 in Hong Kong. But one interested note, I've seen R class in Mainland China (both China/ US Spec), but rarly see one in HK, I guess it's because of our road tax structure in Hong Kong that doesn't favor large CC cars.
