2006 R350L, 16 months and 50,000 km.
Since new, the following have been done to the car.
1. Numerous reprogramming of the transmission probably 4-5 times now OK.
2. Two air con compressors changed due to whining noise at low speeds
3. "Thunk" from rear suspension took 6 months to diagnose and eventually replaced Euro spec shocks with American ones.
4. Steering column changed because of noise
5. Steering rack also replaced due to excessive play.
6. Control panel for air conditioning replaced twice - non operational
7. Rain sensor replaced once and now acting up again.
8. SRS warning light came on and problem rectified
9. Brake Light and Rear Light cluster warnings - still outstanding and waiting now for 4 weeks for parts to arrive.
10. Accelerator does not respond - dealer changed the transducer unit and drive by wire system first time, on the second occasion, diagnosed as loose connector unit and was fixed. Problem has not recurred since.
11. Various rattles fixed in rear seat and inside door panel.
Not sure whether I qualify for the LEMON award but I am certainly going to be writing to DC and the CEO of the local dealership.
Aside form all these faults we think that this is the ideal vehicle for our family of 3 kids and 2 maids that all pile into the car comfortably. We do many long trips as the mileage shows and the performance, safety factor and robustness of the car is unsurpassed. Our sales lady is wonderful and really goes out of her way to get us loaner cars when the car is in the workshop. Just wished that we see more of the car with us rather than in the workshop where it has made nearly 20 visits so far.
My R500 hit 40,500 miles and the problems have started. I haven't experienced any of the noise issues that others have posted, but I do have a collection of electrical issues that are intermittent and annoying.
*Parktronic: Front drivers side goes off when I am stopped at a light whether someone is in front of me or not. Usually happens in wet weather.
*Headlights: Front left one has burnt out repeatedly and only lasts a few months when it is replaced. I am also unable to turn the lights off unless the car is turned off. Turning the light dial to "O" does nothing. They're on all the time!
*Rear Gate: Opens when it wants to.
*Interior lights: Come on and stay on when car is first started. This just started happening and I have to turn the car off and restart it, which seems to work.
*Dash lighting: Flickers from bright to dim.
My car went in this morning to have these issues looked at. Still waiting to hear from the service rep to see what the story is.
I hope my car isn't having a "midlife crisis" at 40,000 miles!
We have an '07 R320 with 13,000 miles.
As the "Family Truckster" it's a tremendous vehicle but I am disappointed in the overall quality.
So far we've had:
1) Multiple transmission updates AND the clutch assembly and valve body replaced.
2) Ignition switch replaced because it wouldn't let go of the key.
3)Left hood latch adjusted twice because it won't grab unless the hood is dropped a foot or more. (flimsy hood has a kink where someone tried to push down on it to latch the left side).
4)Evaporator temp sensor replaced because of erratic temps from the climate control...30 degree differences in output of side vents with same temp selected.
The mileage seems to vary a LOT with this car. When the outside temp goes down so does the mileage...by 3 to 4 mpg. I have a '90 300D that only lost mileage with the changeover to low sulfur fuel. It's been extremely consistent over the 11 yrs and 150K miles we've put on it.
Bought a 2006 R350 and had so many problems (transmission 10+ times, rear hatch 4 times, nav system) turned the car back into the dealer after 3 months. Exchanged for a 2007 R500. Car was delivered dirty, had paint in the carpet, dealer didn't even lift floor mats to clean or take the leaves out of the engine compartment. 1 month after getting the 500 the airbags went out. Dealer "fix it" but same thing happen following week. Dealer "fix it" again. Next week back told it was a loose harness. Was "fixed" again. Back forth week when they finally did fix it. Next week had transmission problems and the rear hatch problems again. Long story short, been at dealer 4 times for transmission, 5 times for rear hatch, replaced moonroof, reset nav system, fixed AC, fixed parktronic. We are Lemon lawing this one.
To top it off the dealer delivered"our car" to us after a repair attempt because we had so many problems. The only problem was they delivered a black C Class instead of our Pewter R500.
Side note, owned 5 Lexus and NEVER been to the dealer with a problem. Just ordered a Lexus LX570. Never buy another Mercedes.
Had issue with fit of Driver Side door, rubbing against jam. Now having issue with power lift-gate not fully lifting. As well as mild rattle noise right above drivers head, almost like it comes from the windshield??
Still very happy with the engine getting between 22 - 25 mpg combined. Some times there is a burning rubber smell after running the car. I will have that, the rattle and the lift gate to discuss with MB dealer when I bring it in for the recall notice I just received.
All in all my TDI Passat was a better put together car. But I needed room for my family so we could go on vacation in a fuel efficient vehicle. I just think for the price a Mercedes would be tighter...

I agree. A Dodge Charger rental car that I had recently was tighter than my Mercedes ML.

I am just about to purchase a used 2007 R320 CDI with 4,500 kilometers I think this a good idea? I am getting a 6 year 160,000 kilometer warranty included. Is it worth the 3,000.00 CAD?

hmm, i think this proves that Made In Germany is better than Made in America! i mean the other German Made Mercedes cars seem to have the same old "overengineered" characteristics.
