Question Any R Class Owners Using a Roof Top Cargo Carrier?

After looking over the Thule website for a roof top cargo carrier I discovered that Thule currently does not offer one for the R Class. I called them and they said that they will be releasing the "feet" for the R Class at the end of September which will work with their cargo carriers.

Does anyone currently use a "car-top" carrier for their R Class? If so, what brand is it and what has been your experience? Wind noise issues?

I bought the Mercedes roof bars (roughly $350) to which I attach a Yakima bike rack. I later bought a Thule box (18 cu ft I believe) for roughly $450. The box mounts to the Mercedes roof bars with no problem at all. You do end up losing 2 mpg on the highway, but gain a huge amount of luggage space thus compensating for the tiny luggage space you end up with when the 3d row is used by passengers. You do get a slight amount of wind noise but that is more from the rails than the box itself.

Sears cargo carrier

I installed the bars and attached my Sears sportcarrier to it. Very easy. Should be able to attach any aftermarket carrier once the bars are in place.

G'day guys, I'm considering getting the 320 CDI for family and work purposes, from wanting to put a large roof rack on it, does anybody know what loadings the roof system can take?

Thanks from down under,
Giddyup, Geoff.

I don't remember the limit off the top of my head, but there is a small decal on the driver's door jamb near the roofline that gives the weight limit. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll go check the decal on my vehicle.

The limit is 220 lbs/100 kg according to the owners manual.

Thanks for that, so by the time I get the 25KG roof rack on I wouldn't be able to put much in it, damn.

Giddyup, Geoff.

The roof bars can't weigh more than 5-10 lbs, and a big 18-cubic foot Thule box weighs 20-25 lb. Therefore the system can easily hold 170-180 lbs. I've taken several trips with luggage for 6 stored overhead without a problem.
