Backup Camera

I would like to add a backup camera to my 2006 R500. I have searched this site and ebay and not really come up with a solution that I like. Does anyone out there have any insight on this? Or have already done it?

Usually when I ask my dealer anything at all challenging, he says it can't be done. I proved him wrong by adding a navigation system, but so far, I am stuck on this one.

Love the vehicle, but my wife is afraid to back up in it.

Thanks

Cool

I would like to know as well. I have an '06 with nav, and the dealer told me the camera can't be added after-market. I have a hard time believing that but have had no success in finding an alternative.

Well, at least i have Parktronic; without it, backing up would be a daunting task.

My 06 did not come with the nav system and the dealer told me it could not be added since it had not been put in at the factory. However, after doing a small amount of research, I found out that he was wrong so I found a mercedes nav unit on ebay, bought it, and had the dealer install it. They appeared happy to install it once I got the parts! So.... I don't fully trust what the dealers say. I think if your 06 was manufactured late enough in the model year, it has what is needed to install the camera. Just need to find the camera and installation kit.... I think.

Thanks RDriver - That is a really good pictorial on how to get the Command Unit out - that would be usefull for anyone wanting to add the nav after the fact also.
the hard part was getting the antenna splitter put in under the back seat by the TeleAid module.

I hope the poster over there posts pictures of his completed project.

Do you know where the factory backup camera goes? I have not seen one that I know of, but it sure would make sense for this vehicle.

OS - He is very likely will post pics of his camera project. But the question is, who is likely to be able to duplicate his skills. The real quetion is then who (dealers / shops) can you find in your area that can do this for your car. I feel lucky to have the PII which includes the factory camera so I dont have to search. For those who want/need the camera, it's worth searching for as it would make backing up and/or parking SO MUCH EASIER!

Hang in there, it's a matter of time . . . also there is a number of GL owners who are actively searching/asking for this as well.

Good luck.

Oops, Forgot your question!

The factory MB camera is mounted just to the left of the rear license plate light bulb. I'll take some pics and post this evening.

I am replacing with better pictures showing the camera position.

First 2 pics show camera and its position relative to rear license plate/bumper.
Third pic shows the COMAND monitor picking up a kid's bike 4 ft behind the rear bumper, which the rear view mirror couldnt show.
