R Class Safety

I am wondering how safe the R Class is. It doesnt have the history that other models have. Anyone see or hear anything from personal experience?

R Class Safety

I can only speak for the US market vehicle. While I haven't seen any actual comparative test results, I would be stunned if this wasn't one of the safer vehicles out there, if not in the top 10 percentile. It has front and rear side airbags plus side curtain bags front, middle, and rear. In addition to the ABS and skid control that many vehicles have, it also has brake assist where it applies additional brake pressure if it detects an emergency situation where the driver hasn't applied sufficient pressure. It also has seat belt tensioners that tighten down the belts in an accident situation to reduce the travel of your body. The vehicle body is extremely rigid with high strength steel in numerous areas. It has a much lower center of gravity than many other vehicles of its size that should reduce rollover potential.

I'm sure I've even missed some of its features, but insummary, this is a safe vehicle!

When I bought my 06 R350, the rear side airbag was an option, not standard. For a car maker that stresses safety, the rear side airbag should be standard.

Excellent point! My window sticker shows side airbags as std equipment for the 2007 model year.

Mercedes Benz are innovators when it comes to safety. In this video the engine is shut-off automatically, the hazards are automatically turned on, and the body remains rigid: YouTube - mercedes accident

The Smart Car (Mercedes) in this video is put to the test. I'm certain Mercedes put a bit of thought into the safety of the R Class when designing it: YouTube - smart car crash

Amazing isn't it...What do you think?

They became optional for folks who are worried about kids sitting in those seats and resting their heads on the doors (big no-no with side airbags).... Even BMW does this on the rear doors.
