I'm considering adding to the base warranty. I can purchase an additional 3 years and 50K miles bringing the total to 7 years/100K miles.
Does anyone know the pricing on this extended warranty? Is it advisable to get the extended warranty for the R350 or is it relatively more reliable than other autos? Thanks in advance!

I would definitely purchase additional coverage. I got my MB Extended Factory Warranty on my '02 C240 for $1,500 which covers practically everything the initial 50K factory warranty will cover except the radio/cd player.
It really paid off when I had an issue with the vehicle's computer and another time with the exhaust manifold. The dealership has many programs to chose from. Some GOLD programs cost an arm and a leg, some cost just a leg
Being that the R has only been out for a few years, I'd buy one for the long haul.

WOW! How many additional years/miles for that extended warranty for $1,500? I'm being quoted $4,200 for an extra three years and 50K miles. Maybe the R class is so much more expensive on the additional warranty period? Big difference if we're talking same years/miles added on...
I purchased the '02 C240 in October of '04 with 28K miles. Now that I think about it, the warranty was actually $2,000 asking price extending warranty to 100K. I negotiated an additional $500 off the vehicle when the finance manager offered me the extended warranty.
The dealership must have already made good money on the vehicle when it was traded in, so there was probably room for more negotiations. Plus, retail blue book on the C240 at the time of purchase was only about $26K...much less than a new R Class.
I paid $3500 for the 7/70,000 warranty with $200 deductible for my 06 R500. I think it's expensive compare to the other warranty I have from my other German car.

THR500, your quote is more in line with mine...I'd be looking at a 7/100,000 warranty (so extra 30K miles above yours, same years) with no deductible for $4,200. It is very expensive. My thought process right now is just to keep the car during it's initial warranty period and then move into a new car at that time. I can just use the $4K towards a new car purchase rather than "bet" I'll make use of $4K down the road on the R.
I think the rationale for the high cost of these, per the dealer anyway, is that it is so expensive to fix these cars these days with the high tech, computer this and that, etc. that is associated with today's cars and the equipment used to fix them.

I think you can get some of the money back if you don't use the warranty. Anyway, this could be our last MB.
After a fair amount of research I purchased an Daimler/Chrysler 7/100K extended warranty that has a $100 deductible. I purchased the warranty five months after purchasing the vehicle and paid $2700 (they had a $200 rebate at the time). I selected this warranty for a number of reasons. First, it is a "exclusionary" as opposed to an "inclusionary" warranty. This means that it lists a relatively few components NOT covered as opposed to the "inclusionary" warranty that lists an extensive list of specific items that ARE covered. Second, the warranty is a factory as opposed to an "aftermarket" offering which should mean that the company backing the warranty will have a better chance of still being in business when it comes time to back the warranty. Third, Daimler/Chrysler does not place AMG vehicles in a higher cost category so the cost of the warranty is significantly less than thru Mercedes. Fourth, the DC warranty has better coverage, is transferable AND can be extended beyond the 100K mile term if renewed at 95K miles. Finally, you can purchase this warranty at any DC dealer which means the opportunity to negotiate the price is much improved.
P.S. - Glad you were able to take advantage of the Sirius Special Lifetime deal. I don't understand why more have not jumped on this.

Couple of questions
Since there is no more Diamler Chrysler now, how is this going to impact the warranty? Where do you take your car for warranty service? At Chrysler or MB?

Thanks again RH and manwagon for responses...
Manwagon, I agree...not sure why more don't jump on the lifetime Sirius deal. The content on Sirius is great, I'm a little disappointed that the R350 we just picked up wasn't equipped with it (I could pay more to get it installed just as I did my car that didn't have it factory equipped but it's my wife's car and she couldn't care less about Sirius.) Looks like you got a very good deal on your warranty. If I knew I'd be keeping this R350 for the long haul I'd explore the option further but I'm not sure how the R will perform in the reliability category being a first year (MY2006) with a May 2006 build date. Being unsure of that I could see myself looking for a good clearance deal 3 or 4 summers down the road.
Which leads me to a question for RH...you mentioned this might be your last Mercedes....why? Because you love it and will last a long time or more likely you've had too many issues/problems?
Also, what is the first month/year build date for the R class? I know they came out for 2006 MY, but I'm wondering if they were out in 2005 or 2006 and when they started building them.
