Having justed completed a 1300 mile ski trip (Purgatory and Park City), I must say the R320 CDI is one of the best ski cars I've ever owned. 3 passengers, two skis and 4 snowboards (even 182cm Alpine boards) all done without a roof rack.
My only complaint so far is the transmission. Some programmer need to get fired. It is simply impossible to bring the car to a smooth stop; when the transmission down shifs, the torque converter does not smoothly match revs resulting a jerky stop. What gives? Only way to smoothly stop is by putting it in neutral. This jerkyness is even more pronounced (and unsettling) in snow.
Anyone else have this problem?
Hopefully it can be fixed with a software upgrade...
However, over the trip, I averaged 70mph (including stops) which means I ran at a rather steady 85mph and sprints to 100mph for passing yet still returned 25mpg overall and was able to drive from Salt Lake City to Sedona Az without stopping for gas!
as with most of the new models, the r class has the 722.9 transmission. there are so many DTB's and updates its not funny. as a tech we have a step by step process to follow when dealing with 722.9 tranny issues.
the most common resolution to the issues is a new valve body. since the trans control unit is part of the valve body, you get 2 for 1. a few trannies are recieving the b1 or b3 clip. I cant remember which one. I have never done the clip, but have done valve bodies. the last resort is a new tranny. if adaptation values are at limit, sometimes TAC just says replace the tranny.
I have a 2007 R320 CDI and I have similar problems with transmission jerking. The dealer changed the valve body, the b3 lock spring and has done several shifting adaptations to my likings. I am still not happy. A specialist from Mercedes will assist in the last attempt to fix the vehicle this week.
Rough shift on first gear. Feeling a jerk both in S and C mode. The car has been at two dealers more than 4 times. Software updates made it better but still not what you would expect. If they don't get it right this week it will be lemon law time.
same problems here. software updated once. improved things a bit but cant seem to get the car to stop smoothly. i actually thought it was the brakes grabbing at first but later on realized it was the transmission. i have a 2008 model.
Yesterday I picked up my car form the dealer. Rough shift from start is gone. I took many phone calls to customer service. As a result they replaced my valve body and a K1 clutch or something like that. The only think that still feels weird is that the tranny feels kind of LOOSE. For example when I am driving above 40 mph with the gas pedal off for a while and then I rapidly reapply more gas I feel like something slams against another part. Almost like something is loose in there. Any other owners experiencing this?

I will occasionally get what you are describing, most commonly if I have the throttle on and then back off for a moment and reapply. There's a bit of hesitation and then a "thunk" sound. I've had similar experiences with other vehicles (this is my first MB).
