That's what I am afraid of - taking both seats out and pull out the carpet...I will try to take a picture of the console. Maybe I should go to the dealer and look at those with a console installed to get some tips... Or anyone here is kind enough to post a pic of their installed 2nd row console?

link: Black & Decker Power Tools

This, for us, is the best alternative to OEM cup holder...

Negatives:
1. Color - Black only
2. Built in cup holders are only good for cans (my r500 has cup holder for the middle row behing the front arm rests so non issue for me)..

Positives:
1. Power connector is up in the front so plugs right into the back of the front arm rests and the length of the cord can be easily managed.
2. A freezer/heater on the go...
3. fits almost perfectly right in the middle.
4. if not used of as freezer/heater then it is handy storage.
5. portable
6. existing arm rests align right on top of this console without an issue.

This was a great find for me just before a long road trip at a local walmart.

Question: Are there not cupholders on the back of the console between the front seats? (I did not order the second row console for my 2008 R class because I wanted the "pass through" space between the second row seats. I thought I remembered there being some kind of cupholder on the back of the front console.

yes, there is a couple of them at the bottom portion that you need to pull down a panel and pull out the cupholders.

I just purchased the Black and Decker unit recommended by Jnitin for my R350 with black interior. It looks and fits just great and offers tremendous utility (all for less than $50.00 at Walmart of all places). I can't imagine why this hasn't been adapted in some way by Mercedes as part of an OEM package. I think this device is going to be very useful. So thank you Jnitin for the suggestion. PS. The Black and Decker label on the front of the device just peels off. It looks like it came with the car.

Very happy that BostonBob found my suggestion helpful.. Something that I had forgotten to say is that it was under 50$$.. thanks for the note.. We find it very useful because we have an infant and on a long road trip, keeping his milk (it holds 2 of 1/2 galons of milk cartons). I am sure others may put it to better use like keeping beer cans nice and chilled .. In a way I am happy that we did not get the OEM center console and got this instead...

Black and Decker Console

Dear Sclancey,

The unit fits perfectly under the armrests. It looks as if it were specifically designed for the space.
