I'm sure most of you have seen me on the ML thread or E in the past.
My E is getting work done this week and I got a brand new R350 to dirve. Had only 800 miles on it.
Is it me or is it slow? Seems like there is not power only at high speed passing over 60mpg+. From a stop it seems like it heavy and there is a lag.
It is big I do give it that, and its like a bus for me now, even though I have the Ewagon.
If someone were to ask me 350 or 500 I would say 500, just to get that extra push.
What have you all found with this car; the 350 enough? I know sales are slow and I wounder if there are more sales of the 350 or 500. My guess is 350 due to gas, but i may be wrong.
Yes, the R350 is very heavy. We have both the '06 ML350 and the '06 R350. The ML is very spunky, quick to respond. The R seems slow but is strong. I found that using the finger shifters helps quite a bit and is really kinda fun. It doesn't take long to get used to if you've driven a manual tranny in the past.
I know we probably shouldn't have to use them, that's why they call it "automatic" right? But for me it just made it a little more sporty. Just simply click the shifter when you need that extra response, then click back for a smooth ride

Don't forget to read the manual... (maybe MB should feature this key part better)
The C/S button (below the a/c) in the center console is for SPORT and CRUISE. Sport is well... Sport and aggressive mapping. Cruise starts the vehicle in 2nd gear for a smooth start. Ergo press the button and the C will change in the dash LED display to S... There is plenty of Torque and HP's there you just need the right setting. Also remember that the MB computer will "learn" how you drive, drive hard in S and the the R will respond and learn accordingly. Drive hard in C and you will still end up with a soft powerband in the R350. The R350 is NOT SLOW (you just need to understand the machine).
I have to not agree with you here. I know both cars (S and C mode) and S is just a bit better, but this dam thing cannot get out of its own way. Wrong motor choice peroid. The 500 would seem like a better option to move this bus.
My 06 ML had a lot more "balls" to move out of its own way. Yes I now how to read the manual and at best this things moves after the 7 speed hits red line.
Be honest with yourself, either power is there or now... Nice car, but way under powered. I was in getting on I95 today and this things was pushing hard to get out in traffic with AC on.
I am in a progress of buying a R. I test drove both the R350 and ML350 during the process and ML definitely feels more powerful than the R . Not sure it is true but dealer told me it is due to the transmission setup. On the other hand, ML's MPG is not as good as the R's.
I agree the "S" mode definitely is better and R350 is not slow at all. Just not as good as the ML.

Well a Kia is not slow either; my point if someone would look outside the box is that the R350 is under powered. Their target market is not looking to go fast, but i my view it comes to a safty issue. Granted my ML or E were or are not a SL500, but they have "enough" power.

I believe underpower or not is really depeneded on the driving preference of specific person. Some may find it plenty powerful and some may not. But I definitely agree with you that R500 is definitely more ideal in the power department for a vehicle this size and weight.

Well said.. I wasnt trying to cause a fuss here, just wanted to get thoughts on what others feel who have or have had a chance to drive the R for a peroid of time. I have had ther R for a few days now and put on 500 miles and my theory still stands; needs more power.
Anyone have the R500 who drive the R350 that can let us know your thoughts?
