Should I buy the new R350

We were car shopping for my husband when I saw the new R class. I fell in love with the sunroof and the dual entertainment system.
I already have a pretty nice ride, Acura MDX, which has DVD entertainment system, Navigation AND a rear view camera.
Do you think it would be worth switching to the R350?
Do you think in such a long car, I need the rear view camera, which I love in my MDX and is not available on the R class?

I will welcome comments from especially the owners.
PS: Is the car running problem free?

Thanks for the advise.

MDX is more like the ML and I would advise to stay away from both. Mybe next year, but as of now they are not worth the money, unless you have a lot of free time to spend at the service dpt.

Jap nav and elect. are far better then MB as well. I owned a 2006 ML for approx 6 months and had to have MB buy it from me, and I got a new E wagon. I love my E and the quility is fine, although elect. are again far behind Acura.

RE: Should I buy the new R350

We took the car out for a day-long test drive yesterday. Overall, it rides very smooth, accelerates like the wind and looks pretty sharp.
Downsides: Navigation is not very easy to "navigate", command central and all other buttons are not easy to figure out unless you study the manual.
Still can't decide if I should get the parktronic, or apt for the attractive dual entertainment screens in the back. Ther are not too many cars out there with both options.
Should I be concerned about reliability?

From what I heard, Parktronic is a must on the R.

Not sure about reliability.

Reliability more than anything. Until they stop making them in AL, then maybe you will be ok. Again, read my post above or do a search of my older posts regarding my ML.

RE: Should I buy the new R350

We went back again today with my husband and looked at it again. If they find me one with the parktronic and the dual entertainment system, I am strongly thinking of buying it. They have a strong incentive this year, that may not be there next year. It looks very attractive to me. Yes, endodoc you are right, I am quite concerned of reliability, that's why I would probably lease it, not buy it. Thank God they are picking the car up from one's house! I am expecting to run into trouble at some point, hopefully not too often if they are learning anything from the past ML experience.

If you know you are going to have trouble, why buy it?? It's like saying I know that my 60+K car will fall apart, but I like the options.. No deal is ever a deal if you have problems.

RE: Should I buy the new R350

Elif,

Please do not be dissuaded from considering the car due to one obviously disgruntled poster. I have had the following MB's in the past 10 years:

1996 C280 - no problems
2000 ML320 - moderate level of problems, almost all covered by warranty, no recurring or unfixable issues
2000 E430 4Matic - power steering failed, warranty
2001 S430 - bordered on lemon with frequent minor electrical problems
2001 SLK320 - no problems
2003 CLK320 Cabrio - no problems
2006 R350 (just got it) - no problems so far

Bear in mind, the ML320 was my wife's daily driver with the kids and dog on board for nearly 6 years so given the abuse it took (far more than the other vehicles) I was not unhappy with the reliability. The S430 was the only car I truly thought "sucked" in terms of mechanical issues. I replaced it with an Audi A8, just so you don't think I'm a total MB apologist.

I would say MB has been attacking its mech reliability issues pretty aggressively. The R-class is a phenomenal vehicle if you need its capabilities.

RE: Should I buy the new R350

I hear you, endodoc ( I am an internal medicine doc by the way), but I really like the appearance of the car inside and out. I figure as long as they are picking up the car from the house, I would not lose too much time even if it does break down. I am also hoping that they are working on the reliability issues, even though they will not be up to Acura standards for a while I am sure. I also figure I will keep the car for 3 yrs on a lease, most cars do not have too many problems that early on ( I hope).

So despite my reliability issues, I have officially decided to get an R350. They have found one w/ both the parktronic and dual entertainment system and bunch of other gizmos, so I really could not resist. If they did not find the perfect car I wished for, I was not going to get it.

I am supposed to pick up my new R this Saturday if all goes well. Wish me good luck.
