Hi Folks,
I'm a new R500 class owner. I am mercedes benz enthusist of 20 years, and now with my first child on the way I was relieved when the R Class came out, so I bought one. The car is comfortable and the drive is supurb. However, after breaking her in for the past month I have stumbled into what may be a defect for future new owners to be aware of. Evidently, when you exceed the 500 mile 'break-in' mileage threshold, there is a vibrational humming noise that comes from the front left section of the car. I brought this to the attention of my MB dealer and they say that this noise is consideered 'normal'. Well, I told them that I have owned mercs for more than 20 years and that this noise is not normal or acceptable. I told them that I want a more indepth analysis of what is causing the noise, and I want the noise stopped. We'll see what happens, but if anyone has had the same experience, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
well I am no car expert, but I bought my R last week and read the instructions about how to drive the first 1500 km. It says to avoid kickdowns, avoid high RPMs and set your Transmission to "Comfort", not sport.
They say here in europe, the better you treat your car the first few miles, the better it will perform in the future. So I wonder, maybe it's possible you didn't go very easy on your R when you bought it?
I dunno, just my thoughts... but I can be totally wrong.
Thx for the reply. Yes, you are correct about the breaking in period, and I have driven her very carefully. The engineers have acknowledged a glitch after the first 500 miles have been driven with the R500 that causes the vibrational humming. Unfortunately they are stating that this glitch is normal. I'm going to follow up today with their further analysis today. I'll post my results.

Hi , Got my R 320 L Sport 2 weeks ago. I get this Vibration when its in D with the brake on . if the RMP is a bit higher it stops. I don't know if you got the problem fixed . MB told me to leave the car tp be checked. it also stops as soon as it goes in N or start moving. Thanks .
Greetings from Singapore and owner of a R350L. There have been a lot of visits back to my dealer for our car. As regards the humming noise, we had a very loud whine come from the engine when the car was moving very slowly along eg. in a car park etc.. and I noticed the noise very early on after taking delivery of the car. It almost sounded like transmission whine. Eventually, we were told that there was a dud batch of air-con compressors & pulleys and this was changed to rectify the problems and it was fixed. 2 months later the noise came back and it appeared to be the same problems - so another compressor and pulley change to rectify the problem. We have since not had this problem return. We've had the car just 3 months now and done over 6,000 miles in it already ! Think is has been run in and the engine sounds great. Alas waiting for a fix to the rear suspension clunk which they tell me is a design fault and waiting for a fix !

What do you mean by a rear suspension clunk? When I have my breaks pressed say on a traffic light or something I hear like a knock knock from the rear. It comes and goes.? Is that what you are hearing.
I also hear humming as if I have a half flat tire when I reach 40mph or more.!>?
No, the rear suspension clunk happens when you drive over a hump on the road (like the speed restrictors) and it sounds like your spare tire is loose in the back and bounces up. This problem happens on cars with no Airmatic option and is a known problem that is waiting for a fix.
My previous problem with the aircon compressor does not sound like the same problem you are having when driving at 40mph. Mine was a whine at low speeds crawling along.
Will let you know about the fix as soon as I hear from MB.... pay attention to the whine and insist on a new compressor and pulley if this happens. Good luck with the car. Once it gets going at high speeds, it really is quite a good car for ferrying the family around. I have just driven it quite hard on my last long trip racing with a Saab 9-3 Aero and it was a close match with much of the time at 5-6,000rpm !! Need a little more oomph ! Already got Sprint Booster which is great.
