R Class 3rd row seats

I'm confused as to how these seats work. Both of these photos show two different ways that they fold.

Unless in the inset photo the 2nd row seats are moved all the way forward with the bottom of the third row allowed to fold flat.

RE: R Class 3rd row seats

Hi,

This is a "Babelfished" rough translation of the description of the rear seat folding mechanism, as published on jesmb.de (see link in my other post):

With away-folded fondsitzen the even loading area reaches longitudinal dimension of 2217 millimeters - measured of the backrest of the front seat up to the rear flap. Also the load volume after VDA measuring procedures exceeds the values of large combination sedans. It amounts to with roof-high loading maximally 2057 litres (VDA measuring method). If the third seat row is away-folded, a loading space with maximally 977 litres capacity is available. In order to adapt the seats to the respective transportation need, are sufficient a few handles:
· in the second seat row first the head restraints are pulled out and put down on the seat faces. Subsequently, the backrests move forward and the complete seat can downward be pressed
· in the third seat row to swivel the cushions first into a vertical position, so that the backrests can be folded forward. Afterwards the cushions can be before-swivelled again and be brought into a horizontal position. Thus an even loading area results from the backs of both seat rows.

Hope this helps understanding the principle just a little bit [;)]

Cheers,
Birger

RE: R Class 3rd row seats

My guess is that they realized that folding the seats (as the drawing suggests) in that manner wasn't going to work.

The photographed method is probably the one that will make it into the production vehicle.

RE: R Class 3rd row seats

From what I understand......and from seeing the car. I believe it does both.

RE: R Class 3rd row seats

Here it is in English....

Versatility is also high on the new model's list of specialities: the individual seats in each of the rear rows can be folded flat separately as required, while the op-tional centre console can be removed completely, all in just a few simple steps. Thus equipped, the interior is able to mould itself to changing space requirements or to the transportation task in hand, making light work of carrying mountain bikes, skis, snowboards or any other recreational equipment items, for example. Even with a full contingent of six passengers on board, the R-Class still has enough space for a large golf bag behind the third row of seats.

With the rear seats folded down, the level load surface extends over a distance of 2217 millimetres measured from the front seat backrests to the tailgate. The vehicle's load capacity as measured using the VDA method also comfortably outstrips the figures for large estate cars, with a maximum of 2057 litres when loaded up to roof height (in accordance with the VDA measuring method). Folding down just the third row of seats produces a luggage compartment with a maximum capacity of 977 litres. The seats can be rearranged to suit the current transportation task in just a few quick steps:

The head restraints in the second row of seats are first pulled out and placed on the seat cushions. Then, the backrests are tilted forwards and the entire seat unit is pushed downwards.
In the case of the third row of seats, the seat cushions are first raised to a vertical position, allowing the backrests to be folded forwards. The seat cush-ions can then be folded further forwards into a horizontal position. It is there-fore the reverse faces of the two rear rows of seats which together form the level load compartment floor.

RE: R Class 3rd row seats

Jack...it is like the wagon. To use the 3rd row as storage, you raise the seat cushion to the vertical and and the 3rd row seat back fold forward to make the floor. If you want to fold the 2nd row, you take out the head rests, place them on the seat and fold the back of the 2nd row seat forward. You then fold the seat of the 3rd row flat and you have a completely flat floor. When you fold the 2nd row seat back forward, it creates the space for the 3rd row seat to fold into.
