I don't think that anyone here has ever posted pics of this lowered engine to access the starter. It's a huge job if doing it yourself and I still have my original starter ..so I can't tell you what problems await you.
Bert Rowe explains the many steps quite well and that's why most well equipped MB shops do the lowering for members who have had to change it out. You might encounter seized nuts along the way seeing as you have to lower the engine and tranny and and supports. I could see some parts not wanting to come apart on an older and somewhat rusty B..
If I have to do it, I will probably go at it from the top, as if I was changing the thermostat out. ..but I'm not there yet..
Maybe someone here has seen it done on their B or watched it being done..?
I am 90% on the way there. I am missing something to lower the engine the rest of the way. I loosen the 4 bolts holding the subframe to the frame. but won't lower. Any ideas?
Have you disconnected the exhaust manifold. Be careful that rust isn't holding it up in place.
Are you taking a lot of photos for us..?
Remember that it only has to drop ~ 4" to gain the necessary access to the starter bolts..as least that's what we've been told..and there seems to be a lot more than 4 main bolts holding the supports in place.
I'd be happy to pull some WIS pages for you, but you need to be more specific - I'm not a mechanic LOL :wink
What's your Baumuster (first six digits of VIN)?
