Rear parking brake spring remove / install tip

Use a long slotted head screwdriver (I'd say at least 10-12" long shaft) with the tip of the screwdriver on the spring curved end, and use the center of the hub as a fulcrum point to pry the spring out and into or out of place. This, I promise, is the hardest part of the job, if you've been applying anti-seize on parts that should have it, over the years, lol!

Just thought I'd share. I tried using all kinds of pliers including a proper brake spring plier for drum brakes, and this was by far the easiest way. It's pretty obvious, but I don't mess with drum-type brakes a lot.

Another quick tip. I hate the hold down springs they use (the ones that secure the shoes to the backing plate). But one of the hold down spring tools (one of the three that look similar) in the kit worked really well, although it's not really designed for this type of hold down spring.

The kit I have, from Princess Auto. Maybe not fancy enough for a pro, but does the job more than well enough for a DIY'er:

HI dear i want to ask one question about parking brake. What needs to be replaced on the parking brake? Is the cable broken, or is the mechanism bad. Is there a problem in the rear brake drum?Tell me back here if anyone know about it.,,

Dear? Lol, but jk (just kidding), probably one of those lost in translation things. "Dear" would be used for someone close, btw. <end lesson>

Nothing was broken. I had inspected the rear disk brakes a few months ago, but hadn't taken the disk off, so the other day I wanted to check everything and lube up friction points (i.e. where the brake backing plate on the shoes rubs on the backing plate where everything is mounted) and also check springs and everything.

Oh, and add location and car info to your profile, and explain what/if you're having some problems with the brake...

Rear Brake pics. Copy/save any you like for reference since I'm at my flickr limit and some may be deleted if I add other pics.
