Took the car into MB and had a chat with a very junior, therefore still interested, salesperson. Talking about fuel consumption and CVT. He suggested that MB had issued an advisory suggesting on a run to force the transmission into 7th by pushing the drive selector to the right. Has anyone tried this and did it work?

Advisory for? i have tried putting the car in 7th gear and it keeps the RPM <= 2000 up to 120 kph, subsequently improving FE slightly.

Following on from the visit which was to resolve my sqeaking engine when cold MB replaced "the belts" free of charge and asked me to tell them if it worked. Well it has done so far the squeak has disappeared. Only time will tell if it returns.

With the squeak gone now all that is left is that 3000 mile trip to Spain.

I've been at Bosch, they found an error (but not with the basic diagnostic tool, they used a complex device which can see all kinds of values (e.g. air flow in keypoints of adminission) and test different reactions of the engine (e.g. disabeling each cylinder one by one). All values were within normal boundaries, that error was comming from the Generator. They disassembled it and they found out the pulley wasn't working properly (was seriously jamming). Replaced it (about 100 EUROs, lucky me it was shipped in one hour).
Of course I did not get rid of the vibrations
Yet I can feel the engine runs smoother, especially on idle and even the vibrations are less irritating...
Anyway, they said it's a really tricky problem (especially because the diagnostic tool did not trace any wrong values.. and they checked all of them), so the only way would be to just take apart pieces of the engine - especially around the distribution and see if there's anything wrong.. But I'm really considering leaving it like this, I wouldn't feel confortable letting them turn it upside down as it works smoother now anyway, so I'd better leave it like this.
By the way, the AC compressor pulley has a bit of play if you try to shake it but it can hardly be felt and the mechanic suggested I shouldn't spend money on changing it yet as it's not going to improve anything and it should not cause any issues for another 30-50.000km, so I'll skip this too.
As for the belt tensioner, that one is fine too, I've recently changed all 3 pulleys on the belt.

yes, it did, and most important, all issues (vibrations, trepidations) now feel supportable so I can enjoy driving it more. I already did, that's why I was so picky about it, I want to get the best of it.
