I don't have contact with TopGear magazine, only with TV show, and they really don't like diesel cars. So I will not trust they opinions (especially Clarckson's).
But it this opinion is a little bit truth. I compare B180CDI with Renault Megane 1.6 16V and it make more noise especially when stay with motor on. In Renault I not hear motor, in Mercedes you hear it and feel vibration. When you ride it not disturb.
Diesel motor has other advantages, less fuel consumption and more torque.
The B diesel has never been a particularly quite diesel & some members seem to have more noise & vibration than others. It has a nice torquey feel about it but I wish it had the 'grunt' of my sons 1.9 Diesel Skoda ( ) VRS with the 170BHP VW engine which really has got some pull but is no quieter than the Bs engine.
When I had the B180 CDI loan car, I thought it was quite loud, compared to the Renault diesel I had before - especially when you turn it on in the morning to warm up. When I got in the B150, I was very surprised as when you sit inside the car, you don't know whether the engine is even running unless you press the accelerator pedal.
