Mine gave me 20,000 km, and I have 800 to go (the car will be serviced Tuesday).
I think your sales guys who are saying to wait a year from delivery should pay for your first service now. You can bet if the engine blows in August, the sales guys are not going to repeat the message they apparently gave you.....

They checked the oil and said it looked perfect but still said to do it now.
I think though I will cancel the appointment and speak to a manager of service about this whole thing. The people are nice but the way they contradict each other at perhaps the most prestigious brand product in the world I found quite immature. I should have gotten a straight answer when I brought the car in.
Spoke to service manager. He said I was right and not to have service until 1 year or 20,000km. They cancelled my appointment and said the computer was not reset at delivery. They did offer apologizes for needless confusion but no free service.
That's fine at least I don't have to concern myself with this issue anymore.
Maybe I should wait until I'm calmer but I'm frankly appalled by the way I was treated (on the phone) at MB-Midtown Toronto which happens to be where the MB Canada head office is located.
My issue is the same as a number of others have mentioned. I am at 8100 km and purchased the car ten months ago (mid-September/07, 7km on the odometer) at another dealership. Twenty-nine days ago the message switched from "Service in 12,500 km" to "Service in 30 days". From having read these forums this means the car was manufactured one year ago and the VIN supports this supposition.
Now the message says "Service in 1 day". I live closer to MB-Midtown than the dealership where I bought. I called to find out WHEN I ought to bring in the car and how long I could wait without voiding any warranties etc. So I outlined my issue about not having reached either 1 year or 20,000 km and mentioned that I understand the computer is triggered by manufacture date.
Service Advisor (Sam Caruso, if anyone cares): "Bring the car in right away. Your car is a year old even though you haven't had it for a year. It was probably manufactured in July 07."
Background fact: Despite my username, I am female. I may not know much about cars but I know how to do research online!
Me: "Uh. As far as I can remember first service is due at 20,000 km OR 1 year. Since I have reached neither of these benchmarks when am I really supposed to bring in the car for service? I can understand that the computer is indicating the car is now 1 year old but I haven't owned it for one year.
Sam: "Well obviously it's the way you drive the car; the onboard computer will adjust service intervals based on your driving habits."
Me: "Excuse me? You just told me that it's because the car was manufactured a year ago. I read the car forums online and know that this is a common complaint from those of us who don't rack up the mileage. My concern is voiding warranties should I choose to wait until I've actually reached the 1-year mark. "
Sam: "Well your car MIGHT have reached the 1 year mark from manufacture. Again, I would say the car computer is responding to your driving habits so you should bring in the car right away."</condescension>
Me: "You just told me it was because the car was manufactured in July 07 which I know is true from the VIN, so why are you now bringing up my driving habits? If this is an issue because the computer wasn't reset when I bought it then tell me how this will affect future warranties."
And on it went. He advised me (guess that's where the Advisor part of his title comes from) to call the original dealership to find about the reset issue but I think he just didn't want to talk to me anymore because I wasn't backing down. Should I complain?
The Service Advisor at the dealership where I bought said I should be fine if I wait for my actual one year anniversary and actually laughed when I mentioned what Sam said about the adjusted service intervals based on my driving behaviour; said he hadn't heard that one before. He also said I should be fine as long as there are no other service messages and that waiting 30-60 days beyond the service due date would not invalidate any warranties.
And dealing with Sam Caruso? It's almost enough to make me think about buying a BMW.

Too funny!! That is exactly who I was dealing with and who caused my frustration too. As you read I dealt with the service manager and he corrected the issue with Sam.
I like the dealership but that guy Sam leaves me quite unimpressed and not what I expect in a Mercedes rep based on blind observance of the computer and not common sense. He also was very reluctant to help me because he was doing something else at time and finally I asked how long I can expect to wait like a jerk standing there until someone helps me. Only then did he bother asking how he could help...oh brother.
On a side note I also own a BMW and the guys over at Parkview around the corner are much much more organized, and on the ball.
Mine is in for service today, we'll see what the bill is at about 4 PM......
I racked up 19,000+ km in 8 months so the one year thing wasn't an issue for me.
Also, unlike Derek's observances on his 2006 model, my car counted down its km to service exactly on the basis of 20,000 km, and no matter how/where I drove the car, it made zero difference to the distance to next service.
My 2005 smart does vary the service interval based upon driving style, but not my 2008 B-Class. In the smart, my driving style typically extends a nominal 8000 km interval to over 10,000 km.
The warranty starts the date you purchased the car.
If the engine says service in 30 days, all you really need is a simple $30 oil change.
There is no need to work yourself up into a knot over this.
