Good point about encoding quality. To many downloads are at a much lower kps, to save both space and decrease download time. And everyone wants 100's of hours play from a cd or mp3 player, well maybe not 100's on a cd, so most downloads are only 128kps.
HI I use Roxio 10 to normalize the sound or maximaze sound.
It plays after great and sound level is about 10 times higher than normal no need to put the volume to high.
Works great for many years I have been using roxio products.
Sounds really amazing specially in Harman Kardon sound system.

I think I will leave it as is and turn up the volume every time I listen to mp3. It is too much work and I am lazy.
It is the same reason I didn't go for a Sony mp3. I hate using their software in order to transfer files. Drag and drop in window explorer is way easier.
we luckily have the aux-in on our car. We use a longer cable that dangles out of the glove box and just rest it in the cup holder.
if you have the larger ipod (classics - 80-160GB), then it's best to encode everything as lossless, but if you have to compress, AAC 192 is more than adequate.
one more thing to improve quality is to use the proper line out on your ipod and not plug into the headphone jack.
one of my favorite iPod accessory is the sendstation pocketdock. using a line-out allows you to retain volume control on the steering wheel and keep sound quality.
