factory service manual

Is a factory service manual available for the B class? I thought I saw something on e-bay a while back.

No; the stuff on eBay is pirated WIS.

Mercedes-Benz USA sells manuals for each model, but MB Canada does not, hence for the B Class, you either go the pirate route, or go without.

The pirated version does work well for some of us!!!
All those guilty...." Put Up Your Hands "... because at the dealer everything is top secret.
MB also offer an on-line manual starting at 4 euros / hour.
As I told them..."I don't think so"....remembering my computer talents.(or lack of)
It would take me hours to find anything and.... I'm driving the B class not the S class!!

They could easily stop the pirating on eBay by offering a proper manual - I would pay up to $200 for one, if it was really good.

Werkstattinformationssystems (WIS)

This is the M/B computerised workshop manual (not available to the general public ) but it does occasionally appear on eb*y.

Apparently it contains all the workshop repair & service information about the whole range of M/B vehicles (with wiring diagrams).
I gather it is supplied on 2 DVDs as it is a huge but unwieldy program.

The WIS is so obtuse, it sucks frankly. I would love to get a real paper manual for this car, for up to $200. Unless you have a laptop with grease-resistant keyboard in your garage, using a computer to gain access to service procedures is asinine.

However paper manuals for every M/B model in every M/B garage would be an environmental nightmare.

Yes I agree you cannot beat a paper book for working on the car but I feel it unlikely that the number of B owners wanting such a manual would warrant putting it into print and I doubt that many would be willing to pay the figure you have mentioned Mike, a pity though.

Regarding WIS, due to it's complexity, I can't imagine many hairy a**ed fitters retrieving information from it, but judging by the hourly rates charged probably M/B only employ university graduates or ex rocket scientists as mechanics whoops sorry technicians.

In the UK we have a publishing company called HAYNES who have been producing excellent workshop manuals (by stripping cars down to the bare shell photographing everything and then rebuilding them & again photographing every step). They have been in business to my knowledge since the early 1960s it is a company like this that is probably the best bet for a manual for the B. I have emailed them enquiring about the possibility of a manual but don't hold your breath on a result on this.

See amended newer posting regarding the current position on these manuals

I'm with you 100% on this Mike.
I got the same run around with the Audi. Got the CD on it and knew the Bentley Publishers Service techs on a first name basis due to the secret way the manual only fits on one computer at a time.
Crazy codes to make it work!! No cracking that one!!
Can't share any discussions like having an open book brought with you.
A true PITA!!
Then they bring out a book and offer the CD owners a "discount" for having double now. It's what we wanted in the first place, a BOOK!!
No wonder our hourly charge is so much, they have trouble finding new info too!!
But if you have a bit of patience, the WIS has a ton of info and the photos to go with it.
Cheers, Derek

I have trouble with the Haynes books. Too often they tell you to go to the dealer. My wife's GM car had a horn problem. Simple !! No horn listed in the Haynes manual. 3 wires because of the factory alarm ??
Their books often omit some of the most rudimentary items or "Go to the Dealer"!!
Sorry Keith....
