How to get better MPG

I have an auto box for the first time in my driving life... 21 years.

The box has two driving modes and i was wondering which program returns the best MPG. Having only had the car since thursday i have not yet worked out if using the comfort program is giving me better consumption than the sport mode or if the MPG is getting better because the engine is running in more now after covering a few hundred miles.

Can any one tell me if they have an found one mode better for economy over the other?

Also if any one tows can they point me in the right direction which mode to choose while towing. C? or S?

The comfort mode is supposed to go into the higher gears sooner therefore in theory should give higher MPG. I did see somewhere that the sport mode is supposed to have a form of driving style learning optomising changes to your particular driving style.

It will take a few thousand miles to get up to your best MPG with your diesel mine was quite 'tight' to start with the temperature guage showing hotter than normal temperatures as mine has just about run in now the guage shows a lower temperature and the MPG figures are a bit better. Mine has 4,000+ on the clock now.

Whilst you are running in try not to let the engine labour too much this can be worse for it than high revving.

I would think it best to use a ramp truck for any towing and I think that's what recommended. Any dealer could tell you right away.
Please don't tell me you're going to drag it behind a motor-home.

Derek, When i say about towing i mean towing with the car, i have a caravan and am due to use it in a couple of weeks. The dealer thought there would be no problem with this. However after reading the cars owner manual i read that for the first 1500km you should be careful not to over rev the engine and not labour it either! So what to do? I am using the car as much as possible but will not have that many miles on the the clock before i drag the van away for the first time.

Thanks for the info kbdcom.

Why not use it in the semi-manual mode when you start towing (until the car is fully run in) then you have control of the changes & the revs. You have seven virtual gears to play with.
When I use mine in Europe I use the manual mode for long Alpine type descents it saves using the brakes all the time, especially when heavily laden as I usually am when touring.

KB, I have been experimenting with the manual gears and find the car responds well with the use of them. I have only managed to get 6 gears though? maybe the 180 only has 6?

So far i am loving the car and glad i choose it. Spending as much time behind the wheel as possible.......

No it will be the same as the B200 cdi (strange they call yours the 180 as it has the cc capacity engine as the 200cdi and with all the other models in the range the model is the cc capacity with a 0 dropped off). You would have thought that with the diesels they might have given a name to differentiate between the two 2 litre versions not make it appear that the engine size is smaller than it is.

You may not have taken it fast enough to go up into 7th gear, there are certain things the box will not let you do in manual mode eg I don't think it will let you over rev the engine I seem to remember it changing up on me on some occasions in the past (on my old B). I know I have seen the 7 virtual gears in black & white somewhere & will try & find it for you.

It has the 7th gear indeed. Maybe you need to be over 50mph to engage it though. I use manual mode almost always ... really love this mode.

Thanks for the confirmation nest18 any ideas where it actually mentions the 7 virtual gears ?
It does not appear to be in the B brochure (well not my version anyway) and I have been racking my brains to think where I have seen it.

Hey Keith,

I remember that I saw it in the interactive manual, but it's not there anymore .... moreover, they seam to have include a sterring wheel gear shift button in the manual ....

Interaceive Owner's Manual - B-Class*[In depth*|*Controls*|*Transmission]

Check at the end of the page .... I don't think I have this on my 2007
