Mercedes-Benz B Class F-CELL
Mercedes-Benz is launching its first series-produced fuel cell car on the road: the new B Class F-CELL.
Power comes from a new generation of fuel-cell drive mated to an electric motor that produces 136-hp and a maximum torque of 213 lb-ft. Along with zero-emission fuel-cell drive, the B-Class F-CELL gets an outstanding fuel-consumption of 71 mpg with a total driving range of 239 miles. 0 to 62 mph will take around 11 seconds with a top speed of 105 mph.
Mercedes-Benz said that production of the B-Class F-CELL will start in 2009. The first 200 units will be delivered to customers in Germany and the United States at the end of the year 2009.
The interesting class B F-CELL only be marketed in countries with service stations in this kind of fuel, and a shortage of units. In Spain , there are three hidrogeneras quarter operating and under construction, ( Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Zaragoza ). In German there are about 15 service stations with hydrogen pumps, but only five of them are open to the public.
This is a vehicle propelled by an electric motor which is fed through a fuel cell. It runs on hydrogen ( H2 ) in a gaseous state.
The electric motor is battery Lithium-Ion , with a power reaches 90 kW, operating as overboost when maximum acceleration is required and, if stocks are exhausted of hydrogen, allowing continue its run for 12 km. Total autonomy over 400 km. The electric motor has a maximum power of 100 kW (136 hp) and a maximum torque of 320 Nm.
The tank of hydrogen, (consisting of two cylinders) is located under the floor between the rear seats and trunk. This has a capacity of 3.6 kg., And consumes about 1 kg/100 km hydrogen.
The fuel cell powered by hydrogen can operate at temperatures up to -25 º C (this is a miniature central chemistry that develops in a process of reverse electrolysis.)
Batteries Lithium-Ion are recharged during braking and retention phases of the engine, and are recyclable and always operate at temperatures ranging from 15 to 35 º C.
An interesting proposal that will be profitable over the years, but since being forgotten by all. Germans expect to just 2015 , this class of engine will have a large portion of the market.
